Re: SightMark Wraith HD4-32 X 50 Diggi scope
Took a SightMark Wraith out the other night to get rid od a few "pesky" foxes that have been hanging around a farmers house.
The set up is Savage 17 Hornet with the Wraith and one of the big 65mm lense 850nm ebay cheapie lights on top and a Night Tech HD-50 hand held thermal monocular.
The wraith with the provided infrared torch is fairly useless past 50' I rekon and picture quality is what I would expect of an $1100 digital NV device and a bit grainy. BUT with the 65mm torch the Wraith becomes and awesome NV tool and clarity is unbelievable out to 200yds!
The main thing with the Wraith is you must constantly focus it for different ranges to keep the image crystal clear but it is well worth the effort and the image is as good as an NV many times it's value.
So I set up on the corner of 3 paddocks behind the farmers house and pull the caller 50' out in front of me. Went back to the car and set the Hornet up on the Mjoelner Quad Shooting Sticks, turned on the Thermal monocular and the Wraith and torch.
I wasn't expecting what happened next, as I swept the area there was a fox 40' to my right munching on a carcass and it had watched me set up! I focused the Wraith and bang down one fox,,,too easy.
Then I turned on the caller and gave it the "rabbit in distress call" as there are a few bunny's around here. Scanning with the thermal all of a sudden there was a fox next to the caller!!! and was a bit taken aback and hurriedly got the wraith on target and didn't focus to perfection and wobbling a bit rushed the shot and "missed" going just under. Cursing under my breath I regained my composure and 5 minutes later the fox was back and this time he had knocked the caller over but was still standing there looking at it. So I coolly focused the wraith, got a good steady aim and Bang 2nd fox down.
I called on and off with various calls for another 20 min and with no results moved of to start spotlighting. On the way out of those paddocks I saw a third fox laying near some lambs but as soon as it saw the light it was off, not even looking back till it reached cover. I thought"you'll keep".
Well after being out over the property and coming back in towards the house I saw the 3rd foxes eye shine in the area I got the first 2. So I motored around to the same location I set up the first time with the lights off on idle and set up again.
I shit you not with the first sweep of the thermal there was the fox, 20' away from me!!! I almost dropped the thermal and rifle it the excitement. By the time I focused the Wraith it has wandered out of sight into some bushes but after my first "miss" I kept my composure and waited and watched then out it popped 15' away and started walking towards me.... I thought crap it's going to lick my boots. It just stopped for a second and I took the shot at what I thought was 10feet away. Down it went. When I turned the headlamp on I was only 6' away that I had taken the shot!
What a night, one happy farmer and 3 dead juvenile foxes which explained there behavior. 3/4 grown.
So one glaringly obvious thing I found with the NV is distance is very hard to gauge and even more so with the thermal.
The HD-50 is awesome for the coin and you can literally km's from one side of the valley to another but things that look close may be farther away and some things that look farther out are closer. So I really think these devices should have rangefinders built in.
The Thermal monocular and Wraith are an awesome combination.
So there you go I hope this helps some.

It truly is a great deal for the money.
I was very skeptical after watching some average youtube footage. But I realise now that that footage was due to being out of focus and/or using the provided ir torch.
To make the unit work it MUST have a big powerful ir (although they can seem too bright at the closer ranges)
The brand name big lense ir torches are up to $350 but the cheapo ebay/alibaba jobs for $65 do exactly the same job.
