Lens cleaning?

Hey guys, I have ended up with an over spray of oil on the lenses of one of my scopes.

I tried soaking it up with a patch but it wasn’t absorbent enough and just smudged it.

What would be the best way clean the lenses up?

Or a bit of rag and some metho.

Thank you, I’ll pick up one of those kits.

I was thinking metho might damage any coating on the lens, but I’m not totally sure.

To be honest, if metho damages the coating, then the scope wasn't worth the money (regardless of the price you paid).

The optical dispenser I have used for over 30 years knocks up all sorts of custom lens and the only cleaner he has on his bench is metho.

I keep my metho in the fridge.

Cut the metho 50:50 with water if you are concerned. That shouldn't hurt anything but the oil.

Mind you, the oil is more likely to damage the coating than the metho.

thank you for your inquiry regarding the cleaning of your ZEISS lenses.

When cleaning objective and eyepiece lenses, you should always first remove any sand/dust or other particles and then wipe off any moisture, oil, grease or other spots. Depending on the amount and level of contamination, you can use a lens pen to remove a few grains of sand, for example. In extreme cases when the optics are really dirty, you can first wash them with lukewarm running water. To remove oil and grease, you can use ether, acetone or soap and water.

In any case, carefulness and caution are recommended.

Do not wipe the surfaces if any sand or dust is present. Over time, this will wear away any coating. In theory, this could also occur with the stamp side of the lens pen if it is not used properly. However, this is unlikely if it is used properly.

just asked my colleague about the cleaning.

Yes, it´s possible to use isopropyl for the lens coating.
