Howdy all.

Long story short the crap quality laminatei used a few years back to make a thumb hole stock for my hmr is starting to split up the middle. Have a spare piece of premium aa grade marine ply laminate from my ftr stock build so I’m going to start carving into it.

Thinking a change in shape is in order though as the thumbhole isn’t my favourite. Wondering what the McMillan a5 shapes are like for carrying around?

I like mine but a lot of people think they are heavy or too bulky.
If your fit and the forend fits your hand they go well.
If you prefer less bulk they do make the other models.

I like the a2 same pistol grip but narrow for end

I didn’t like mine and sold it. Perfect prone , what it was designed for, but just not as naturally comfortable off the ute spotlighting. It may have had something to do with making the rifle too heavy for that purpose but whatever it was I just never loved it

Yeah I would have to re shape it down to a smaller overall profile to suit a rimfire barrel and action. Also would probably not bother with the butt hook. Maybe the a2 is one to look at as well. Mostly will be used out of the window but there’s even very chance it will get slung over the shoulder and taken for a walk

Got to play with an a5 at the lgs today. I think i might have to go something different grip wise. Not a big fan. But the shape of the a2 isnt bad. Need to look around a bit more for the ultimate rimfire stock.

When I get home I will put up a field stock Bob Eager made for me. It works well out the door free hand or off a bipod. Laminate with a cross section pistol grip. Might suit .
I have a large palm and the a5 and sako trg stocks seem as if they were customized just for me.

I've got a few a5's and do like them, the A2's are pretty good as well. I even like A4's but they are heavier again.

So this is a thumbhole of sorts. Flat forend. Size it to suit. This stock works really well.

Yeah I have piss arse small hands and I’m off thumbholes. Saying that, I could go something like this. Just need to build it for small hands. Probably a great stock for the 22. Wouldn’t like to know what one cost to get here...

The stock from the cooper varmint extreme is possibly up there with what I’m sort of thinking.

I love my A3. Also used a McMillan game scout which is a A3 with slimmer fore end suited to light weight barrels. Think that would be great for what you are after.
