The 461 action has 2 different bolt shrouds.
Are they both 461 or is the closed cover an A1?

The L461 and the A1 are the same action. Most L461's have the smaller diameter cylindrical cocking piece while most A1s have the broader tapered cocking piece, however there was a cross over with some of the latest L461 marked actions having the A1 style cocking piece. In terms of action functionality I think the only difference is that the firing pin on L461 can be adjusted or replaced, whereas on the A1 the little set screw that holds it in place in the cocking piece has the head drilled out.

Where you will see a difference is stock style - all L461s and the earlier A1s have stocks that are a little thinner in the pistol grip and have the distinctive vixen 'square-angled' cheekpiece, whereas the later A1s have the more rounded 'hunter' style stock that is fuller in the pistol grip. The sporter stocks on the L461 are slimmer with a squarer cross-section than the more rounded 'Hunter' style forend. The different style feel better for different people.

In reality it makes no difference which one you pick - they are both better than a Zastava.

Hey Marcus - you seem to know a fair bit about the good old Sako's - can you tell me the age of that one on Used Guns' listed today. Thanks in anticipation

G'day Barry.

The Sako Collectors Club forum is a good resource for questions like this. One thing that is routinely made clear is that Sako were a bit blasé with their use of serial numbers and two consecutive numbers could be for rifles that we built many years apart - it seems they didn't alwauys use them in sequential order. The forum also has a service whereby you can purchase a copy of data from the factory microfiche build records but it cuts out at around 1974, which I believe is before that stainless barrelled .17 Rem was built.

I had a quick flick through some posts which finds that prior to 1971 the L461s has a plastic black grip cap and the checkering on the forend was of the 'two pointed' design. After 1971 there was no grip cap and the forend checkering is a 'three pointed' design like the one on used guns.

The SCC forum does have a pdf file of serial numbers gathered from original hang tags that matches action, chambering and serial number - of course it is only a subset of was was actually built but it is useful to get a ballpark idea. It suggests that the rifle you asked about might have been built around 1977-1978.

And what new toy are you getting now?
You need another one, you haven't bought anything new for a few weeks.

You speak as though there's something wrong with that...

Maybe a 20VT or just shoot a period sako in the classic 222
