Had a play with a Pulsar Apex XD75 scope last weekend. The owner uses it for the foxes on a Sako 85 stainless fluted varmint in 204R. Even though it was daylight when I had a play it was apparent that it was a quality item and judging by the 30 or so videos he showed me of recent fox kills it is an efficient method. He also had a monocular for scanning/finding targets. It was only a 3x magnification instrument but seemed like a quality unit as well.
I would love to own one but the $6.5K pricetag precludes this.......

That's a pretty huge price tag - I guess I'm asking the foolish question now is that unit far superior to the Nite Site Eagle , for instance, in case anyone has used the Nite Site ?

Ast to your question. Quite simply once you have used thermal all the rest is secondary. I have Gen 1, 2 and 3 NV where the PVS14 is a milspec unit that saw use in Iraq, so it is as good as it gets with a doubler and variable intensity laser sight. I am selling all that to get my third thermal. Digital stuff is subject to the quality of the IR torch of which i have a few. Yes you can make do with digital as long as you are aware that there is no light gain. Using IR closes you in and creates flaring in scrub. The PVS14 and similar Gen 3 are as good as it gets for light gain and suffers no flaring apart from outside light sources that autogate and dim the unit down to protect the delicate tubes.
Those that have thermal, and i do have an Apex XD75, know that there is no hiding in virtually any terrain. The heat signature is a beacon in the snow field. What you might see at 200 yards with digital or even gain NV, i can see at 1500 or more.
Recently i was out with a good mate that had some awsome Gen 3 stuff. What i shot he couldn't see. That about sums it up.

Dave - I can't help here cause I'm on a very steep learning curve with this "thermal" gear but still very interested. Don't want to upset the 22BR thread but keeping a close eye on what Crackers / Matang & others obviously more experienced than I'll ever be are saying & hopefully more to come. I've seen a couple of these thermal units ( I originally thought they might have been long johns ) such as FLIR Nemesis 6X Gen 2 & Thor HD 384 1.25-5x on Used Guns but know nothing about them.
