what cleaning rods are you using?

Post by The Raven »

For the past few years I've been using multi-piece cleaning rods and have finally decided to get some proper cleaning rods. The multi-piece have been fine, but I'd much prefer to have some single length rods.

What cleaning rods do you use and what are your thoughts on which features (for a stick ) are best?

I use a dewey? brand rod and it is pretty good, nice bearings in the handle and q good sized handle too. Another thing you should consider is a good bore guide, I have recently discovered possum hollow guides and bloody love em

Dewey is one I'll look at. I already own a decent bore guide.

Never buying a steel rod ever again, they bend and stay bent. Carbon fibre ones bend and go back to straight. Im using gunslick ones at the moment and have been very impressed. The other good thing about carbon fibre rods I have found is that if you have a carbon fouling problem, you know straight up because the rod will sing at you when your pushing it down the bore.

I have a dewey 20cal carbon for the small stuff like 22lr and my 222 and the 5.7 mmj

A long tetra in 224 for cleaning the the swedes both the old one and the new ai with 30inch barrel.

Both have been great, tetra seems to have pretty decent coating for it too.

I have a .22 cal Bore tech and for the last week I have been using Crackers .20 cal Dewey rod. Both seem very good.

Thumbs up on the possum hollow bore guides as well - I bought three to suit the Sako .222, Rem .22-250 and the Parker Hale .243.

My gunslick for the 20cal is stuffed already (the thread has crapped itself) and my jags come out. I have a carbon fibre job but they flex way too much for my liking. I think I'll go a Dewey or one of the other better brands next.

Not good is it mate, I liked the rod up until that happened (first time I've ever had it happen to any of my cleaning rods) bloody things only a yr or so old too.

It's still useable (more or less) I just push the patches through, take the jag off pull the rod out and repeat, haven't tried it with a nylon brush as yet but suspect it would leave the brush in on the backward stroke.

Ah well time to buy something better!

Yep Proshot for me as well, started with plastic coated rods and they soon ended up with dirt, carbon and all sorts of other shit imbedded in the coating, SS proshots for me now, full diameter instead of needing to be reduced to allow for the coating also makes them stiffer than a coated rod.
