Boyd's thumbhole stock

Hi all,

Recently went down the Boyd's thumbhole stock route, so I thought I would share..........

Waiting time was 4 weeks from order to delivery.

Rifle to fit was a Ruger VT MK2 in .223 (which makes it a stainless bull barrel short action)

Stock ordered was a VT Ruger Mk2 short action Applejack laminate (finished)....
....for $99us, plus $59.40us post and handling.

The barrel channel was a bit narrow, so I invested an additional 2 hours with emery tape wrapped around a broom stick (wrap the tape in a tight spiral on the stick, then staple the ends and use it like a big round file....) to open up the barrel channel an extra 1mm, and then fitted the new stock to the action........

Needs about another 30 mins of sanding to finish floating the barrel, but it's looking good, and handles nicely to shoot. And I won't get it mixed up in the rack next to all those boring woodgrain coloured rifles!

cheers, curan.

Too be honest, I haven't weighed it yet.

It's lighter than the original, which had been drilled internally to lighten it to 1270gm.

I'll weigh it later and post then (give me a day or two.....)

I've contemplated a Boyds myself.

They are exceptional value and quality for the money.

I reckon they are the bees knees, only have one original factory stock in the safe now, thats on Brno ZKK 308, Im not gunna change it cause I like it too much. Have the boyds on my CZ Hmr, 22lr, ZKW 465 5.7 Jphnson, and have another two in the safe to go on my Zastavas when I get them rebarrelled and a spare that is going onto my old Brno mod 2 when I get it back from rebarrelling.
The two for the Zastava M85s only took 8 days each from order till delivery at my place out here in the back blocks. Great service, and customs didnt even have a look in the boxes like they did for a couple of others. Have to do a bit of fiddling with the bedding and barrel but I like stuffing around with that stuff, colours vary for me, have Grey, Forest camo, and brown laminate, probably should have got another couple of different colours.

Hi V|PeR,

Just weighed it. 1289 grams.
So it's actually 16g heavier than my original (but lightened) stock.
Feels lighter though, so I'll assume the balance is a little better with the thumbhole (or my mind is playing tricks! ).

cheers, curan

Looks pretty good. I have a Ruger VT the same ... but I like the factory stock though it's getting a little tatty from nearly 27 or 18 years of work.
