Just wondering what brands of solvents you guys are using and what is the best way to use them? I am using tetra gun solvent atm and am finding it's not that great at cleaning getting ALL of the junk out. I am looking at other brands of cleaners.

I use short scrub for powder and sweets for the copper.
Hoppes isn't too bad either.

I use Butches Bore Shine on most of my rifles and I find it very good. I also have some Wipe Out but I save that for the 17 Rem.

i use shooters choice and sweets for the copper. You need both, as the carbon and copper is laid down separately on top of each other.

I also use JB bore paste as a very good abrasive cleaner, use it sparingly and it wont damage the steel but it sure does get rid of heavy fouling and reduces the amount of liquid solvent needed for badly fouled bores..

Butches bore shine is another Benchrest favourite too.

Tetra solvent and pro-shot oil. Have also used gunzilla oil(organic, helps the skin) which is also good.

For the semi auto, I use tetra action blast and tetra oil again.

When I was a kid I used sweets and backed it all the way although a lot of people say it's to corrosive???? I still think it's fantastic

Boretech eliminator for copper and iosso bore paste for scrubbing carbon from the throat every hundred or so shots. When I store a rifle I then turn to hoppes, a couple of wet patches and store it away will get any remaining copper dissolved or crud loosened before shooting again. And on that note I give my rifles a couple of dry patches before shooting.

I use Chux cut to size as a patch. To remove carbon use Mercury Power Tune on a bristle
brush, patch out, then KG12 copper solvent, then Hoppes No.9 when putting back in safe.

I've been told never to fire a dry clean barrel, causes gouling, the proj needs a very slight
lubricant, Hoppes or Penetrene works.

A barrel doesn't need to be 100% copper free, a slight amount of copper fills microscopic
pores in the steel.

Yowie who told you that one about the "dry clean barrel" never heard that one,,projectiles are copper jacketed and to use lube would or could cause a rooted barrel....but then again I'm no expert....but I've been shooting for 40+ years....

I've heard the same thing and use a very small amount when running a barrel in. But I don't have any problem firing clean barrels. My trueflite barrel is like a mirror on the inside- it got a dose of short scrub before firing. There is very little copper in it when cleaning after shooting.

Don't go putting oil and such down your barrel before firing. Last thing you want is a bulged barrel.

Quick Silver top tune outboard engine cleaner for carbon and powder... used with bronze brush...

Sweets 7.62 with patches, sometimes Nylon brush until blue is gone...

Sweets oil for two patches at end then patch out clean so ready to go next time..

JB paste rarely if the barrel is not cleaning up as I would like.

Butch's Bore Shine, Sweets, Hoppes 9, Boretech Eliminator all at various times.

Still cant beat GM Top Engine Cleaner for carbon but I only have about a litre left so will have to use something else soon.

Sweets and Butch's are probably my most common and prefferred.

JB Bore Paste is only for once a year clean or after some sort of massive fouling issue.

The GM and outboard cleaners are good but they are fucking toxic.

I use Bore Tech C4 carbon remover and Cu+ copper remover (separate products). Both excellent and not poisonous. In fact, both products can be shipped via air from the U.S - I buy them direct from Bore Tech.

I use Iosso paste (similar to JB but slightly less abrasive) to clean out heavy fouling around the throat area occasionally.

I use Iosso nylon brushes and Bore-Tech proof jags, which won't shed copper/brass and give a false return on the patch.

Justin, those iosso nylon brushes are awesome arent they!

I also use butchs triple twill patches, they are very very good. Did think about the carbon and copper separate solvents, but boretech eliminator seems to do the job well as it is. It gets copper out as quick as sweets but the first few passes and brushings with it get alot of black stuff out first.

I am using Hoppe's no 9 BR and sweets 7.62.

I think what it's fundamentally important is to let the solvent do its work-that is let it sit for a good 5 minutes before scrubbing with a brush.

McMillan have recently introduced a cleaning product although it is rather expensive and I haven't yet trialled it-truth be known it's probably just Sweets in a fancy bottle with a well branded name.
