Hi guys, I have been having problems with my Leupold VX-L. I am an accredited commercial kangaroo harvester and every night lately i have had to sight my rifle in twice in a night. For example last night i used 54 rounds for 23 roos..... something is not right. Usually missing 2 or 3 in a night is standard. Its driving me crazy i had no problems until i fitted this new VX-L. When i sighted for the first time last night it was shooting 4 inches to the left so i got it hitting bang on and all was ok for 3 or 4 hours then i had to sight in again and this time it was hitting 3 inches to the right???? Can anyone help me solve this problem or is anyone else having similar problems?

Cheers Guys

Hi BigDog,
Don't know if anyone has welcomed you yet so if not Welcome.

The first thing I would make sure is if all my rings and bases are done up tight. I've seen this happen before (GriMo) and think this is the logical first step.

If they are secure and not loose at all then perhaps its time to send it back to Leupold for warranty, they have a lifetime warranty so they will either fix it or replace it for you. Just put on another scope if you have one for the time being. If you bought it very recently take it back to the gunshop and tell them that its not right and see if they will replace it then and there for you.
Like anything mass produced there is always going to be a small %age of product that fails. That is excusable as long as they willingly and happily make things right which I'm sure they will. I've never heard any Leupold warranty horror stories.

Of course mate, no point in dealing with bad equipment. Did you check your mounts?

Hi bigdog,

Firstly, welcome.

Secondly, apart from the mounts being tight, just check that the mounts are high enough that the scope is clearing the barrel and action all the way along.

I know this sounds obvious, but I had a quality scope fitted to a rifle, and it was playing up. I discovered that the larger section of the scope where the turrets are mounted was just touching the action. I'm not sure if it was the heat of use, or what, but it played up like a secondhand lawnmower.
Changed the mounts, the problem disappeared.

Finally, I had a problem some time back with weaver style bases that had been screwed to the action. The mounts were tight to the bases, but the bases had come loose to the action. I only noticed when I heard/felt a very small "click" when I picked the rifle up.

All this might be too simplistic, and perhaps it is in the scope, but I figured it's worth mentioning.

regards, curan.

I had a similar thing occur except my gun shot great with the scope and rings, i just wanted to put a better scope on the gun.
I had to change the mounts and rings (went from 1" leupold qrw and burris bases to 30mm DNZ gamereapers 8)). Only found the loose screw on the base went i took the scope off and the rear mount moved a litte. The fronts were on real tight.

This same problem has happened to me in the previous century yeah as you said, you sight in the rifle everything works great and after a few hrs the scope was out again in my case it was the rifle, a semi auto an SAFN49 in 30/06
the way i fixed the problem i fitted a deflector to the receiver..... to stop the cases hitting
the side of the scope on Ejection

i noticed this after one day wiping the scope down with an oily rag... side of the scope had a small brass rubbing on it and against a black scope tube it stood out. once i fitted a deflector
to the receiver this all stopped. look for brass rubbing or a very shallow dimple on the tube of the scope ITS A DEAD GIVE AWAY!

you see and all others reading this: single & double barrel guns mostly come EXTRACTORS and some have EJECTORS

95% of Rifles out on the market have an EJECTOR claw..ejectors are spring loaded.
