Bit rough mate, but then so am I  gunna be lots of grinding to clean things up, followed by filling holes and covering up, thinking of using H/T black paint for most of the parts that wont be in contact with the meat.

Thanks for the comments fellas, having fun doing this job, lots of out of the box thinking trying to adept stuff that I have in the shed, don't want to spend bugger all cash on the project, only need to pick up the motor, when the water goes back so I can get to the ute.

Some more done today, started off adding a couple of brackets for the uprights of my height adjuster to stop them moving around too much.
018 (Medium).JPG
Then made up the saddle to go around the spine with the two prongs to go through the meat either side of the spine to stop the carcass flopping and potentially breaking up when near the end of cooking. Used the threaded part of the bung collar that is welded to the top of the keg, cut it off and then welded the last two pieces of 1/4 rod I had. Cut the threads and then cut out a strip of excess that was the end of the keg to go on the outside of the meat when cooking. Made up the two spacers out of the spear from the keg with a couple of 1/4 washers tack welded to the end.
019 (Medium).JPG
Next I made up a couple of sliding stops to stop the shaft moving laterally when working. Then I made up the bearing holder for both ends, the tail end was made out of a stainless work light mount welded onto the end of the 5/8th height adjuster rods, I then covered in the ends and cast some lead for a bearing, runs nice and smooth.
020 (Medium).JPG
Drive end bearing housing was made out of the screw in bung out of the keg, blocked of then ends half way using a large washer cut in half, then poured some more lead in for a reasonable fit, I stuffed up a bit by not using a narrower piece of round tube to case around, its a bit loose around the shaft, but still does the job pretty well
021 (Medium).JPG
Ill use some animal fat or cooking oil on the bearing surfaces when using it.
Did a heap of grinding and cleaning up welds today, even cut the meat spikes off and re did them as I wasn't too happy with the way they were, much neater now. I am going to paint all the surfaces that aren't going to touch the meat with some high temperature black paint, something like they use on exhausts, should be able to clean it up pretty easily.

That is the end until I get out and acquire the motor, then there will be more head scratching and working things out.

Stay tuned.................................. :D

Great stuff.
Looking forward to sitting in front of it waiting for dinner having a drink.

Interested to see how you hook up the wiper motor. Do you use the motor and gearbox or just motor?
Tried modifying a wiper motor and mechanism to just rotate but couldn't get it to stop going back and forward. Binned it and used a battery drill.

Bruce, my plan is to mount the motor underneath the bike wheel so that the tyre is sitting on the shaft where it comes out of the motor, using friction between the two to give me the grip required to rotate the wheel, Well that is the plan, hopefully the motor will have enough grunt to rotate it. Otherwise it is back to the drawing board, again  Another plan is if the one out of the ute isn't powerful enough, I might be able to get one out of an old international truck out in the bush, it might be a bit more powerful being older and bigger in the winding.
I also have a couple of 1/2hp, maybe 1/3hp 240 volt motors out of washing machines, but then I would need to run a genset to power it up at the Missathon.

If anyone has any ideas that may help this be more betterer, please jump in with suggestions, other than welding it back together to make a bloody distilling vat.

Still going to make some tool rests and a couple of other little bits and pieces, ideas required there too. :D

I think Bruce already gave you the answer if the wiper motor fails....

I get old ones the batteries are stuffed on and hook up some wires so they can be powered from a car battery. Variable speed and reversible, put what you want in the chuck.

That's what I do to clean my primer pockets. I use an old battery drill wired to 12v and these....

They take a while to arrive (on a slow boat from China?), but they're cheap, easy, and do the job.

Test run completed today, getting 3 rpm with the wiper motor on high and a 1 inch rubber foot screwed onto the end of the shaft for friction on the tyre tread. Just about perfect, low speed gives me about 1.4 rpm.

Photos later one. I will have to pull the motor mount down to tidy it up a bit, but am very very pleased with the outcome.
