I just got a Sightron V-Tac 2.5-17.5x56 for my 223 and its seems good so far, havent had a lot of time behind it yet.

Yeah Spacie, any of those heave things would defeat the purpose of you having a nice light rifle, that Browning was very easy carrying the other day, I really noticed the difference between that and my old Mauser.

See if you can get a bigger objective, would give you a bit more light for situations like we were in the other day. 4-12x50, or 4.5-14x50 would be ideal. No experience with Swaro scopes here, but they tell me they are good. Try finding a 4.5-14x50 Zeiss Conquest, they sometimes come up, I know its a bit more in the bottom end, but would you notice the difference ?? AO or side focus model, I find side focus better as its easier to adjust without moving the rifle.

Can't think of many more options, however I have the z3 swarovski 4-12 bt and it is a pretty good scope and easy to use, whilst not being too heavy and not that expensive in the scheme of things. If you don't want the bt function then there is a brt reticle option with swarovski's too.

You are a stalker with a light stalking rifle I would have though a light low mag stalking scope would match. Maybe a 3-12 max.

Are the 400m deer seen frequently or do you want to concentrate more on rabbit whacking with your 300?

If you see those deer frequently get you old man to build you a long range 300 wsm with a heavier barrel and varmint stock

A Conquest DL 3-12x50 would be the sort of thing you want but then again if you want a lightweight scope for a stalking rifle you wouldn't want a 50mm objective and 30mm tube. It's all about compromise.
Lightweight, low mag, small obj or heavy large mag range and large obj lens. They are pretty much your options.

But I'm saying that 400yds and a Sambar I'd say 12x is more than enough for a "stalking" rifle.

If I could afford it, I'd have 3 purpose built sambar rifles. Unfortunately I'm a second year apprentice saving for a house so that doesn't seem likely any time soon.

Longer shots have the potential to be a common thing, the property I'm focussing on ATM has a line of sight of around a kilometer along prime deer country. But I'm not willing to lose my stalking rifle for a purpose built long range deer tickler. Unless of course someone wants to by me that 375 sledgehammer off used guns.

What you said with a 3-12 would suit me perfectly, and matches the criteria I listed.

The sledgehammer on used guns is a stalking rifle, weighs around 10-11lbs. If you want a purpose built long range deer rifle that isn't it.

For what you are after another scope to consider is the Kahles KX 3.5-10 and the Z3 3-10 (really a 3.5-10). The Z3 is a little smaller at 42mm OBJ., but the Kahles is slightly better quality.

I have the 3.5-18 Z5 and it is an awesome scope, but not what I would consider a stalking scope.

For 400m shots on deer I am very very happy with my 3.5-10x50 Kahles CL (earlier model of the KX).

I used a few that tick the boxes you mention,Leupold 2.5x8,3.5x10,4.5x14 are tried and tested,having said that I made the mistake of checking out a swaro the other week......siggggggggggggggggggggh

I made the mistake of sighting in my 17m4 with its new Zeiss at the weekend right before sighting in the new budget sightron on the 257wby,

I have it on good authority that he got the Z3, and has already christened it with another sambar to make into jerky. He is pretty pleased with his purchase, and is now one of the converted brotherhood, out with the Loopy yank scopes, in with some classy European glassy.

Good news and he didn't muck around christening it...he's getting that deer hunting caper down pat!
