Here I go again, what to purchase?

Post by The Raven »

Been thinking (again, I know) about a new 308W rifle. Maybe something leaning a bit towards long range but without going crazy and keeping costs reasonable.

I've been impressed with my 270W Browning X-Bolt with brake so I consider that a good starting point. Love the smooth action, light trigger (with spring kit), brake, and overall feel and accuracy.

I took a look at what Browning has available and it looks like the X-Bolts are discontinued with run-out pricing on some existing stock.

The X-Bolt LR looks to be good combo and not too dissimilar to what I have now. It comes with a adjustable cheek piece and muzzle brake and the FDE version looks nice.

The X-Bolt Max LR gets very good reviews but the only calibre left during run-out is 300RUM. Not interested in a different calibre, particularly one of the lesser mainstream ones. My mind is set on 308W which only leaves me with 2nd hand rifles, which don't appear to be for sale anywhere. This combo is probably a bit of overkill for what I want but the strengthened receiver, fluted heavy barrel, brake etc. very nice. Price is also within reason.

Of the two I'd lean towards the LR for practicality with the Max for desirability. I like a little bling.

I've looked at all the usual catalogues and websites but haven't been able find anything that really grabs me. Additionally, my local gun stores all seem to be cutting back on the range of brands and models they stock , probably due to economic factors.

Requirements are simple:
  • Known quality brand
  • Budget around 2K (minus scope setup and accessories)
  • 3 lug bolt/60degree lift (noting how I like the Browning bolt setup)
  • Good recoil pad (I'm working to eliminate a flinch)
  • Muzzle Brake
  • 308Win (as I already load for that and don't need another calibre)
  • Adjustable trigger (or modifiable)
Yes, the budget is tight. Not because I'm a tight ass but, I can't justify to the Mistress of Finance spending much more once I've decked it out with mounts, rings, scope, trigger etc. Plus I'll have to sell off a few to keep everyone happy :(

In writing this I think I've answered my own question but would be keen to hear if anyone else has suggestions or....a lead on a good second hand option.

I just purchased a Ruger Go Wild in 7mm/08 but .308 is also offered. These are Cerakoted in bronze, 3 lug bolt, fitted with a muzzle brake and a good recoil pad. They take an A1 style magazine and are under $2k.

May be worth a look.

Thanks mate, I hadn't specifically spotted one of these and also just discovered the Hunter version. I'll have to check them out at the LGS assuming they have them in stock.

I have a Ruger Hawkeye Predator in .223 which I find fantastic but noted the "Americans" don't use the same M77 action. How have you found your rifle and is that trigger good?

I'm a fan of my Browning X-Bolt but also like the Rugers. My focus here is more on a reasonable long range rifle, hence the Browning (Stalker) LR with a 26 inch barrel is intriguing.

No decisions yet, just trying to see what's available in the price range...but that run out pricing on X-Bolts is pretty nice for what you get and, it's tempting me to jump sooner rather than later.
