Styer Pro Hunter

I was just wasting some time at the local gun shop and the dude behind the counter decided it was slow enough he could show me a bunch of rifles (in the hope of a sale no doubt).

Anyhow, after looking through several he showed me the Styer Pro Hunter (in stainless). Has anyone had experience with them?

They seem a very well built rifle but I've not heard much discussion of them here.

I was gonna buy one in 22-250 but it would have been a 6 ,month waiting period for a new shipment so I ended up with another sako...I heard they shoot very well and as you know are well made.
I really don't think you could go wrong they have a good reputation....

Andy Montgomery reviewed the Pro Hunter in .223 and .243 in the Guns & Game magazine a few years ago. Can dig it out if you want. From memory he raved about the trigger, and they were both quite accurate.

Hi, I'd love a copy of that article (if it's not to difficult to find) as it may help fill in some details.

The set trigger models are exceedingly scary, after the first surprise release I tried again this time literally 'barely' touching the trigger. With the set trigger the let off has to be under 1 pound (it ain't anything close to a 2lb trigger).

Yep, looking at the .223 and would like to confirm the twist rate as the number given in the store couldn't possibly have been for a 223.

Let me guess, no-one makes replacement stocks.....

Yep, not my cup of tea at all. I spose those who own them, like them. Have heard they shoot well, I fondled one in a gun shop at one time, and wiped my hands after handing it back.

Yes, not the prettiest but they do look to be very well built.

If you want to see ugly (cosmetically and quality wise) take a look at the Remington 700 'Police'. WOW, never have I handled such a poorly built NEW rifle! Even the guy in the shop was embarrassed to stock it, let alone hand it over for me to inspect. Worst quality firearm ever, receiver poorly machined, gravelly bolt, and a $2 paint finish. No wonder everyone modifies them...

There seemed to be a significant price drop on the standard Styer Pro Hunters about 4-6 months ago from where they were. The heavy barrelled Varmint models still seem to be retailing for the same price.

I suspect the updated models SM12 and CL II will finally be released in Australia by the importer??

Yes, I noted a significant price drop some time ago. It was a decent drop to, several hundred worth.

On their barrels, I noted three different 'weights' of barrel when looking at them. What I call their 'medium' barrel looks to be just right.

A couple of folk I know have them in 308. They are both amazingly accurate - not pretty tho

Sounds like there is nothing left to do but to jump in to it. Hope it works as well for you as those two 308s - they regularly are able to put 5 touching shots at 200m.

Won't jump yet because dreaming is still free....which may help me evaluate my choices in a somewhat logical fashion.

Haven't tried the Pro Hunter, but if it's anything like my old Styer Model M, you won't regret buying it.
