Knife brands

Post by Greysa »

Afternoon fellas, I am looking to purchase some new knives, but I have found it almost intimidating with the large selection of brands available, so I thought I would draw on the experiences of the helpful gentlemen on this forum. I'm looking for field dressing knives and a belt knife. I would prefer non-folding. Cheers in advance.

I have a small collection of fixed blade knives but always have a Havalon Piranta in the pack as back up, those things are very handy and you'd be amazed just what you can do with it.

Cheers,

Mate there's a lot of good and cheap knives out there such as Victory, Swibo, Dexter Russell and even Tramontina they are all good and will hold an edge. Beauty is that you don't need to threat if you lose them as most styles are well under $50.

Pretty sure the best affordable butcher style knives these days are still Green River that may have changed though.

I do like the idea of replaceable blades on the Havalons that is a great idea.

I'll second the other brands mentioned, I've got a couple of Victorianox's and also some John Nowill of Sheffield butchers knives, can't fault any of them. The John Nowill ones are carbon steel and require a bit more maintenance, but are easy as to resharpen and get a razors edge. As for belt knives, take your pick, you're only really limited by how much you want to spend. What are you after the belt knife for, bushcraft, general camp chores, field dressing etc.

Svord do not make a bad knife high carbon blade that will stain with blood acids.

The best knife I have or used was made by a fellow Member Glenn.

Green River and victornox are great knifes steel is a bit soft but easy to get an edge.

Depends on your budget mate. Check out Kizlyar knives. I've reviewed a few and they're a nice bit of kit! I thumped hard on them and they stood up to everything. I've used tramotinas and their ok for butchering knives. They don't keep a great edge but for the price they are great. F.dick make a nice blade too.

Give the guys at akc knives a call. They have a great collection. I now exclusively use a D.H. Russell R1 & R4, best handling knives. Akc are also a lot cheaper then anyone I could find. You will be impressed with their collection and advice.

Yep AKC if you are going to order online. There's one big online store that I'd stay clear of, but it's not AKC. :)

The F-Dick line up of knives is also pretty good, I use a selection of their knives and Victronox for my butchers knives. I do have a couple or three Green River knives as well, and they are pretty good too.
I dropped my F-Dick that I use for field work the other night, but managed to back track with the aid of my GPS and found it sitting on the edge of my old wheel track. The bright blue handle made it stick out well, and I doubt I would have found it if it had a black handle like the Victronox knives.
If you are half handy and like to have a bit of input into your knives, I have found looking in Op-shops for old butchers and carving knives is a great way to get a good few together very cheaply, some need a bit of TLC and a new handle, but that's all part of the game as I see it. The better quality ones usually have very nice steel in them. And you can pick them up for a buck or two. :D

Thanks for that idea camel, at least now I have something to look for when dragged into one of those places. Years ago I used to check out the pawn(not porn) shops for scopes and crap but not these days.

I'll second the recommendation for F.Dick. quite reasonably priced, hold an edge nicely and as camel said, blue handle would make finding them easy.

We use f-dicks. From sticking pigs to butchering, we have found their knives to be of pretty good quality and value for money.

My swing blade knife is a havalon piranta, I carry this with me on farm every day and it appears to be holding up pretty well, the ability to swap blades out is handy.... Mine has just been used mostly for cutting up rice plants as of late and the odd roo leg or rabbit for the dogs.

All my butchering knives are victorinox, only fixed blade belt knife I have is a dingo blades drop point skinner purchased about 25years ago off Wilf Williams before he sold his designs and trademark to Dewey.
