Another what scope? In regards to a 204 Ruger

Post by Jacko9 »

G'day All, I am looking at a scope for a project rifle in the pipeline, a "work funded" rifle basically,as you blokes already know :bang: And, I think, we should all get back to talking about hunting and shit instead of bitching like high school girls

Anyways, I need a scope to suit a 204 ruger under the spotlight and for daytime varminting duties, I am willing to spend up to around $1500 odd, give or take a bit. The rifle is a cz 527, so I don't really want a massive nightforce sitting on top to overbalance it or anything like that, a Leupy vx6 seems to be leading the charge at the moment, even if leupies aren't my first choice  Either that or maybe a swaro z5 or z3, anyways, looking forward to hearing what you blokes have to say, I'll probably sell off a sporter scope and a rifle to fund the scope, but I don't use the items in question, so thats alright, any suggestions would be appreciated blokes. I don't want any more than about 18 on the top end I don't think and still want a usable bottom end of 3 or 4, and an objective of somewhere between 40-50mm.

Cheers,
Jackson.

Zeiss conquest 4x14 x 50 or a 6.5x 20 x 50 Z plex reticle for spotlighting.

Jacko Ol55 makes some sense and so does BP72.The scopes mentioned offer good light gathering for brightness and clarity under the light.but for another thought why not a Sightron S11 Bigsky 6.5-20x50 a mate bought pne recently and it pressed me .By the way I have a Conquest and love the 8x56 Kahles

Thanks mate, I think they are pretty cheap out of the states currently

I had an 8x56, the objective is just farking massive, prefer a decent 50 mm mate, kahles do a 10x50 I think anyways but I'd look at the Ziess victory 2.5-10x50 if I wanted something like that I think?

I have a vx3 which would suit other than the reticle really, not worth getting it sent off and changed, I'll just sell it and get something else! I also have a 3-9x42 kahles ct which could get the jumper, just thought more mag could be handy,..

The advantages of the Conquest especially the 6.5 x20 has over the 8x56, I own both,
is on a flat shooting mutha like he 204 is while spotlighting you can wind it up to 20 if you need to
make sure of your target. It is also more than satisfactory for sniping at all but
the extreme end of the 204 capability. Mine currently is on my 17 Rem Fireball was on my
17 Ackley before that on a 223.
A very versatile scope.

Im in the same boat here Jackson. Ive currently got a 6.5-20x44 vortex on my 527 .204 which is great during the day, nice and sunny, but come spotlighting it lets me down a little. Ive spent so much time looking for what scope to put on my new .204. Heading towards a Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 since it'll spend more time shooting under spotlight than long range bunny busting, and I don't have the same sort of money to spend on my optics as you.

Gary, great minds think alike. :D I've got conquests on all my rifles, except the 20/222 which has a Kahles 3-12x50, mostly 4 - 14 x 50s, they are a fantastic package for the price. I do have a 6.5-20x50 sitting in the safe waiting for something to grow out the bottom of it, like a HB 300winmag. For the 20 cal at night, I don't think you would be under scoped with a 4-14, plenty of power for long shots.

Cheers mate, I just wasn't sure whether 6.5 would be too much on the bottom end for when I go walkabout on foot too.. As I use mostly 3-9's at the moment.

Far from rich mate  Im just selling a lot of shit and doing overtime and working behind a bar on weekends again to fund it, I don't have a single spare night at the moment again, between duck shooting, and bar work

I reckon that clarity is a more important ingredient in the scope stew than top power. I have taken quite a few foxes out to around 300 yds at night, (not meters as that would be too far at night  ) using the side focus brings up the picture very well. Cant quite count the hairs on their face, but very close to it.

Ive spent the past 6 months in the same boat with my 204 T3. Currently have a VX2 6-18 the scope does well , but I want better clarity at night for identification.

I've pretty much settled on the conquest 6.5 -20 x 50 or the conquest HD5 5 a25x 50.

Just need to save up the coin

All the best

I agree with that mate, clarity is important! damn right important.

Hi mate, only thing I'm not sure about is don't they have 1/3 MOA adjustments? Seems a bit off to me?

8mm adjustment instead of 6mm, not a great deal in the whole scheme of things. Maybe for longrange target stuff, but for your type of shooting there wont be any difference mate.
