Nope, and if you go nice and "gentle" with it you'll get a surface that almost looks like it was done with a plane.
I highly recommend having a play first because they cut on every surface on every angle and each gives a different cut.
If you were holding your grinder as per normal a cut from left to right gives a different result to a cut from right to left, same for down stroke vs upstroke. Then there's leading edve vs trailing edge cuts, it sounds like a lot but 15 minutes on a piece of scrap and you'll be turning out masterpieces.

I've just used it for the rough out of the shape, then I'm going to tidy it up with a sandpaper flapper wheel in the grinder and by then I won't mind expending a little elbow grease on final shaping/tidy up/oiling.

Like I said it's got a way to go yet but it'll make a couple of little girls with short arms very happy when it's finished, they are already playing with it every chance I give them.

you got me motivated to get the stock I want on my mach4. So boyds will sell a laminate blank for $39 US. Yippee. Click "calculate shipping" and the total price is now $143

Hmm, the old one can stay a while

Got the same problem... got an earful over the phone while at the LGS only seconds after smoking $1K on new barrel, chambering and another rechamber on another gun. She was online banking at the same time I was there.

She knows theres another barrel coming but not another bolt and plus pay for the sightron target scope that Ive already taken delivery of....

UPDATE

I stuffed the piece of timber I started with. Glad it was only a building site scrap. But today picked up a very nice piece of hardwood laminate. I know its going to take more work shaping but im prepared to do it right.

Will re mark out the shape and possibly do the first straight cuts tonight.

Brad, go to www.carbatec.com.au and look at item DRUM-20L ( drum sander kit) for $25 and Microplanes item MP-32000 (microplane rasp) flat blade and MP-32004 & MP-32001 with half round rplaceable blade.

These tools are great for hand stockmaking, as you don't want to be tooo aggressive when shaping the hand grip & forend as you can quickly remove to much material with power cutters.

PS they have a store in Perth.

Cheers

Good advice Bob

I have been looking at the microplane files and drum sander for a while, from the sound of it you like them, are they are as good as claimed?
