Hey guys,
I Have an old BSA meteor in 22.cal, which shoots terribly so I intend to get rid of it.. I want keep the scope off the old meteor and buy an new airgun in .177.
all I want is good accuracy over about 25-30m for pest birds like Indian Myna's ect.
I only have cause to shoot an air gun occasionally so only want to spend $500 bucks max.
Any suggestions??

before you offload the meteor
See if Lewis at Beeman AU can breath new life into it- he really is a marvel with AG's.
he might be able to save it for a lot less then the 500 clams you are thinking of spending
where abouts are- can you update your profile giving your location please
P
P.S.
or another idea is trade the BSA in to Lewis and see if he still has an R9 in .20 in his S/H rack.
might be a little bit more than the 500 you were think but a great option and well worth the extra coin
a .20 cal is a great hunting pellet- almost the grunt of a .22 weight pellet with all the speed and flatness of trajectory ofa .177 but with a lot less tendancy to ice pick through like a .177 can at times
If I had space for another AG (AirGun) I would get a .20 cal- just for the fun of it.

Thanks Ogre6br,
I'll get in touch with Lewis. I like the sounds of the .20 cal. But what do mean by 'icepick through' like the .177?

.177 is such a small pellet that it sometimes doesn't hit anything solid enough in the animals or bird you shoot to casue it to expand or deflect.
This expansion or deflection casues it to dump it's energy in said bird or animal this makes the kill more emphatic
Now most .177's doesn't have any spare energy (FPE) to not use it all- all the time
Ice picking is where the pellet just passes through without hitting anything critical and the bird usually- flys off.
I know a lot of blokes swear by the .177 for a hunting rifle Been there done that for 15+ years with a Gecardo .177 and now there are much better options
If you have the chance pick up something with a bigger pellet and more grunt it makes the hunting better and more emphatic and the kills quicker- which is what we all want.
There are exceptions- if you tell us 90% of your hunting will be rats and mice and pest birds in sheds at under 10m- grab a strong- QUALITY- .177 and some quality pellets like Silver bears and go to town- just remember to post up a heap of stories and pics
but
If you are going to go for general AG hunting- a bigger pellet with more grunt is a good idea- and you said 25-30M pest birds- thats general AG hunting work.
I went a bit extreme with this more power is good thing
I got a .25 cal shooting a 32 grain pellet al about the same grunt as a 22 subsonic- it makes any shot under 20m a bit iffy as 90% of the time I get through penetration. Even with the mega mouth Crow magnums that expand almost to a 5c piece size.
So
I have to be extra carefull of my back ground/ backstop.
For you a nice .20 or 22 cal doing anything from 12-20 FPE with quality pellet like a JSB Exact or Beeman FTS will do great things for you.
And if the BSA meteor in 22.cal is rebuild able and it accurate again it should fit in those FPE parameter somewhere. 14 FPE is 650 FPS with a Beeman FTS
I have a computer program that will work out trajectory and FPE figures once you find out what the BSA is capable of doing.
Hope this helps and doesn't go over board
I get a bit worked up about AG's and prefer guys to spend smart and quality $$ and get an AG that with proper care they will use to teach their grand kids to shoot with.
Rather than some Chin crap that they will want to throw in the bin and give up on AG's in the process.

Mate that is oustanding!!
Ive learnt more in those paragraphs than I ever new about AG.! And Ive had the thing for over 15 years.
Which brings me to a point! My 'Old Man bought me the Meteor. So If you think a 'Lewis Job' can make it 'shine again' I might go down that road.
You make a good arguement for the 'kill power' of .22 over the .177.
Ps
Ive always used target pellets before this, ......So im sure ive 'Iced Picked' a few unknowingly!!!.dam...

For the cost of getting it sent to Lewis ( dealer to dealer transfer) and him to have a look at it and give you an honest opinion- then you can make an informed decision- Lewis should also be able to give you a rough idea of what it should come up to velocity wise.
No he/you wont know what it will come upto actually till he does the resto work- but a good guess from Lewis of what it should do it usually quite accurate.
Lewis may be able to offer you something on the books already done and might be smarter $$ in the long run- but it's unlikely you can know that Till Lewis has had a look at the BSA.
If Lewis still has that Beeman .20 cal (not the limited edition one the other one) that was for around/just under $700- seriously consider it
I know it's a few more clams than you said you originally wanted to spend- but for the Rekord trigger and all set up and running with pellets and your scope on it.
Just wondering- have you checked it's not the scope thats FUBAR and thats why you cannot get good accuracy out of the BSA- springers are murder on scopes- especially those not built to work on AG's.
Back to the BSA
Ask Lewis to give you his opinion on what velocity a restored BSA will do with either the Silver Bear, or FTS (any common Beeman pellet he sells) or JSB Exact as I have all the parameters for those in my computer program.
Have you ever used that blue tin " airgun oil" that you get from some gun shops on the BSA?
or any other silicon based oils etc?

The R9 in .20 is a fantastic match, they're a beaut rifle and the .20 is the best of both worlds especially for springer power. They hit hard and shoot flat and have shown to be very accurate with multiple pellets. You can't go wrong with Ogre's suggestion and talk to Lewis.

I bought myself one, and Lewis added JM bits before it left him.
My wife picked it up, and liked it so much that I had to buy myself another one, as she would not let go of my new toy
.20 seems made for R9s.

how heavy is the spring on a R9? Would an average 12 year old boy be able to cock it?

Its quite heavy, if they can be taught the butt on the shoe technique then maybe but they are quite heavy.

Place the butt on your foot/shoe, in one hand steady the rifle in the other pull down on the barrel to break, I have seen others do this but directly on the ground, thankfully not to my r9!

Same thing as doing it in the groove of your groin- but on your foot
Ok makes sense
top of thigh / groove of groin keeps the rifle well away from the ground

No ogre6br I have'nt. What do you use it for?
Regarding the rest of it.......I have thought it over and rekon I'll have a crack at 'accurising' My Meteor. The scope should be good as its designed for air rifle use...
I'll let you know how it goes...

YOU DONT USE IT FOR ANYTHING AT ALL ON AN AIR RIFLE- SILICON OIL IS DEATH FOR AIRGUNS
awaiting how your accurising goes
