cheap plinker

have toyed with the idea of an air rifle several times and thinking again.

Only after a cheapie but capable of taking small pest birds and hopefully not falling apart after a couple of tins of pellets.

Held a Gamo CFX, underlever to cock model.

Is this any good. It was $375. are there better in that price range?

Trev,
You of all people know you get what you pay for mate.
This is even more true with airguns. Speak to Lewis (who is an airgun GOD) You will spend more than you want but you will have a gun that will last forever. Honestly mate you want a Beeman R9 yeah its about $300 more than the Gamo but its so much nicer. But when you get the R9 you want it to be Maccari Tuned, muzzle brake and have a nice G&H Scope on it. Ok so you are up to over $1000 now for a pea shooting airgun but damn you will love it.

Or if you go right out there get a PCP one shoots like a real rifle.

Springers are funny beasts and the way you hold them can dramatically change their POI especially with the elcheapo ones.

Keith, your not helping!

If I spend that sort of money I would want a centrefire. I know a good air rifle is a serious piece of equipment and much more than a toy but I am looking at it as just a bit of cheap fun and really want to stay in the best of the cheapie category, if I bother!!!!

This is a Lewis R9 with the Maccari tune and muzzle weight etc and G&R in .20, It will shoot the JSB's ontop of each other at 10 Meters, and will hold a 1 inch pbr out past 30 yards with about 2.5 inch drop at 50. Put it this way the Mynah's have learn't not to hang out around my joint  That target was shot at 25 Meters and know I pulled those flyers the left are H&N and the right JSB's.

Keep your eyes and ears out and you might find a bargain, think Grimo found a .177 R9 for $150  not too long ago.

Haha well I think you should just buy a 22lr then mate I know what you are like and you will be disappointed with a shitty airgun but perhaps you need to shoot a shitty one and then shoot a good one to see the difference?? But honestly you are better off just plinking with the 22lr as that will be more enjoyable then a gamo or the like.

That being said see what Lewis has that's 2nd hand he has all sort of stuff.

Keep in mind that Yrrah from the forums shoots his PCP airguns in rimfire BR30 matches and places or wins with them. Of course this isn't what you'd buy but interesting none the less aye?

TrevorT- buy once cry once

Talk to Lewis he may have something in your budget

finding an R9 for $150 would be a good thing if you are lucky enough

How quiet do you want it to be-- if not that quiet- borrow back my HW-90 of Thommo and see what a quality high powered AG can do

forget the HW-90 then

Unless next time you drive to up that way and you meet Thomo- you can give the HW-90 a run and see what you think...... you can make an informed decision about the quietness or not of the HW-90 and whether it would suit your application

and maybe
you might be feeling generous and and this is the big and- thommo has finish using it- can you bring the HW-90 home with you

I'd say yes but only if Lewis had a look over it first and gave it a clean bill of health
really
I'm sure Lewis could do better for the $$ he has suggested
but it is a good find for a kids in the Barn gun

Pat,After selling Trevorts Hmr the boys will need a cheap to run plinker. Iam sure you have seen the Hw35 on used guns for not much more than what Trevort quoted for the Gamo.I would be interested to hear Lewis` view on the Gecado

Dad and uncle taught me to shoot with a G-25 almost before I was out of nappies
