clean your barrels much?

Hey ladies n gents.

I was getting some rather poor accuracy with my Baikal IZH-61 compared to the Beeman R9 and put it down to it being not very accurate, but after reading up some posts on the internet, many people seem to think it was quite good at 10 metres...

So I decided to get the cleaning rod that came with it and shoved a whole bunch of tissues up n' down the barrel for about half an hour. Each little chunk of rolled up tissue came out with filthy brown poo smeared all over it. Would the manufacturers have covered the inside with oil before shipping to keep it from rusting maybe?

Anyway, should air rifle barrels be cleaned out on a regular basis? And how do you guys go about it? Fluffy pellets any good for the task?

cheers

I usually just put a cleaning pellet thru after each tin of pellets.

My air pistol gets the fluffy pellet treatment a couple of times per year probably works out every 1500-2000 shots.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

How do the fluffy pellets look after they've been through the barrel? Pretty clean? kind of dirty, or caked up with crap?

I must say, shoving a rod down the barrel got me worried about scratching up the riffling...

My understanding is to avoid using a cleaning rod on airguns as the barrels are made of soft & easily damaged steel. They don't need cleaning often but just as others have said a tampon up the spout every now & again (mainly to remove condensation from the barrel).

We tend to use a looped coated sea trace pull through with a piece of napier cloth and wd40.
