pointy pellets??

I was at a shop when a bloke was picking up a Chinese crappo

I advised him to get domed pellets as they are better pellets for hunting and give better groups which will get the kids confidence up more
and therefor they will want to shoot more

He kind of listened to me and then brought 2 x 500packets of Wasps or similar pellets and almost as a second thought some no name domes that the GS had.

This was even after the gun shop owner said- listen to this bloke I ask him for Air rifle advice sometimes- he's (meaning me) been shooting air rifles religiously for 10+ years

So please educate me properly on why domed pellets are better than point sharp ones for use in air rifles.

And a little more info than-- they work
I need more information so next time i can be a bit more knowledgable and convincing

Thanks
later

Thats a good question Ogre.
I will give my opinion but thats all it is.
1- I think that most pointed pellets are of a lower quality than dome pellets, less quality control.
2-I suspect that a pointed nose may push through the air differently at high speeds and therefore become unstable.
3-Alot of the time the results from a cheaper AR is not going to give the best results ,no matter what pellet you put in it,better groups from quality pellets but not as good as quality pellets from a quality AR.
Anyway thats my spin on it.
Lewis or Harry please chime in.
Regards

My testing has shown the same ... pointed pellets rarely shoot as well. Might be that they're just harder to get consistent, where dome and flat-wadcutters are simpler to make?

I would say its just harder to make that point in exactly the same spot every pellet where as the dome is easier and more consistent to form.

The quality has to be top grade like the JSB Straton. If the point is even slightly off centre, they will be hopeless.

1. Points more likely to be damaged.

2. The bearing surface that engages the rifling is longer on domes compared to the overall length of the pellet.

3. There are more excellent domed pellets around than points.

FWIW my FWB 127 loves Superpoint and shoots them as well as or better than domes, but the Superpoint has a shorter nose and long skirt and IMO that helps to make it stable.

Then again there are so many variables with airguns it's not funny - I'm betting a rifle doing 12 ft/lbs might like one pellet over others, then when upped to say 20ft/lbs another may do better than at the lower level.

Could be something for the PCP bruthas to try! :?:
