Am I just ignorant (keep quiet everyone!!!!) but aren't firearms supposed to be transported by companies that know what they are doing?

That looks like it was intentionally mistreated. It wouldn't have mattered if it was some $5 eBay purchase or a rifle, that level of shipping abuse should never occur.

Looks like someone was stomping all over the boxes in the delivery van...

Looks like a pre-1980 1813.

Such a pity.

Although I have seen similar damage fixed and the rifle returned to useful service.

That was a damn good guess but take a look at the trigger guard and guess again.

I now see the squared off early 80's trigger guard, but I based the date on:



The screw-on dovetails and raked forend made me think it was earlier.

1974 1413, still has the wing bolt
The 1813's all had the big triangle section at the front of the gaurd
