If you don't mind a less humane kill then a red ryder will take care of VERY small birds (I tried this as a kid with mine).
A .177 pellet gun with flathead (wadcutters) will do the job, up here in America we have morning doves (you Aussies got them too?) and I don't think my Diana 34 .177 is icepicking (through and through) them.
For just birds you want more accuracy though and maybe less power, I would suggust maybe a Remmington 77 airmaster that shoots bbs at 750fps, this should be enough for your small birds. This rifle is also cheap, if you want to make an investment to use for a lifetime get a Beeman or RWS. A Benjamin could also do good but are higher on the power scale and may over-do it.
A Winchester pellet gun is also an inexpensive alternative and can also take out everything from small birds to rabbits at close range.
Remember that by purchasing a higher grade pellet gun you are making an INVESTMENT. If you have children this is also a great tool to get them into shooting sports.

reason I asked is that a " mate of a mate of a mate"
was telling me about "his" problem with pest birds in his fruit trees in the back yard....
He tried with a Air rifle very similar to mine.....Rapid MK2 .25 cal- fancy a mate having such a similar rifle to mine- he was shooting on his rural zoned property
and within 5 minutes the back neighbours had stuck their head over the fence to ask what was being shot??
and the side neighbour had come round to see if he could have a shot too
Now this " mate of a mate of a mate" thought it wouldn't do to disturb his neighbours so much so I asked what here would be suitable.
Though the back neighbour did ask the " mate of a mate of a mate" if he could get that fox that has been giving his avariy a hard time over the recent months. So it's not all bad
Thanks

Get your mate onto a pumper like a Sheridan Blue Streak or Benjmain 392. Bugger all noise with 3 or 4 pumps giving about 400fps, but can be cranked all the way up when the full whack is needed.

*shakes head*
Ogre mate you are lucky that you have one of Victoria's finest who is a cool cat.
Remember this in future that I don't want to be hit up with warrants or subpeonas to give your ip address up because we can't be discreet about certain things.
Fenring mate you have a PM (unrelated).
