Damn you Geoff!

I have asked Ned this question a few weeks ago. Can do pretty much anything as far as a blank to suit.

Have been thinking of having a crack myself.

G'Day All,
Sniggy rang me today and we had a chat about a stock for his Air Rifle and mentioned the interest here in the AR forum.

Basically, I've only worked on RF & CF rifles, but "in principle" if I have access to a well inletted stock, I can copy it. There are a number of quirks to the inletting but I think I've got it sorted and I need to make a few more tools to tighten up the inletting where it is 95% or better when finished. Remember a factory stock will be inletted a little bit sloppy to ensure the stock will fit all firearms they make.

Please be aware that to make a full pattern for a stock as a one off for a customer may not be entirely practical/cost effective. Essentially you have to make 2 stocks (handmade pattern and production copy) and hope that others will also want a copy in the near future. So I have to weigh up whether there is a market for that particular design. Some designs are popular from the start and well worth making a pattern for future orders.

The risk of using a second hand or an original stock is that any errors or flaws in the original stock that are not obvious WILL be copied by the duplicator into the new stock. Not a real big issue with the exterior surface but potentially a huge issue where the action bears upon the wood. Ideally a good bedding job will rectify these issues as they are usually minor.

Also it must be kept in mind that I just carve wood, so I'm not yet a licensed dealer/armourer here in Victoria where it is a requirement by law to make stocks for sale. Especially frustrating when a customer asks me to make a stock for his rifle when I'm have the appropriate license to use or borrow but cannot inlet the stock for them! Weirdly enough, I can inlet for my own rifles and then sell the stocks! Also you must be aware that without the metal work (barreled action, floor plate DBM etc) it is just that little bit harder to ensure a really tight fit. I'm working on some ideas the can mechanically overcome this issue and I'm also looking at a digital solution for the CNC router. Naturally owning every single make of rifle and have one of all the variations is well outside my resources!

If you need a variation on a design, I can alter the stock during carving so nothing is impossible, it just takes time and is up to the customer to decide what features are important, i.e. thumbhole, no checkering, stippling, or checkered grips etc. Sometimes even a subtle change can make a big difference as you will see with Camels and TrevorT's stocks (I'll post them under Gunsmithing soon).

So I hope this explains the issues from my perspective and thank you for the interest. It's a great journey!

Hi Ned,

Just wondering if you can do left handed stocks for the sinister ones among us. Does your panagraph have a mirroring option where you can do a reverse version of a stock?
