Something short so it doesn't intrude and make loading fiddly and dangerous.

It must be a proper airgun scope with AO too. Even though the 300S is recoilless to you it isn't to scopes and will break them!!

You also need to use proper mounts designed for FWB with the hardened cross pin. Less than the right ones will slide off and damage the rail.

Lewis might be able to suggest better, but Potters Firearms might be worth a call. I know they do Hawke scopes rated for air rifles......

A 4-12x40 is what I use for silho, but the FT boys normally like higher mags to range-find with the AO. I'll let them chime in, but I reckon you'll need a 6-24.

If you are going to shoot silho, I recommend you discuss getting the 300 tuned for a bit extra performance. You will be at a disadvantage with Rams with the trajectory......

.... and I'm not sure how the 300 would go tripping the targets on a field target course. Again, I'll let the FT boys chime in on this.

A few use them for field target with success but the 50mtr targets can pose a problem, I have one I have yet to set up as I need a mount,
I think it would be as good as the springer HW 97 that I use at the moment as I am spoilt with stock fit of the Air Arms.

The 300s aren't as harsh on scopes as a coventional spring. Pretty much any scope will survive the almost recoiless shooting cycle. Even a tuned 97K is much harsher than the 300.

It's a case of what you're comfortable with when shooting FT. Aa lot of us use larger manification for better ranging but having said that, I shot my first Nats with just a 4-16×44. Did alright too. If you're ol55 and you can range accurately just by sight, then a magnification up to 20 is plenty. I use the largest mag to range and wind back to around 20 to shoot anyway.

I currently have an AEON 8-32×50SF on my HW77 (1983) and a 10-40×56SF on my BSA Goldstar SE. Currently working closely with AEON to manufacture a 10-50×60 & 10-60×60 for specific FT usage that has 8-100m parallax. I should have a prototype in late July and I will be sending it to hell and back for its field trials. Too many brands test their scopes with large bore powder burners which bear no resemblance to a magnum springer. I've been testing all the Aeons on a Hatsan 125 double recoil shoulder destruction unit.

Fair enough that they might not be as harsh, but they can still kill a scope. My local club was using the old Tasco (Japan built) World Class scopes on two FWB300 club guns and sending them out for repair at a rate of about 1 a year. For years, as there wasn't a lot of choice of scopes that would go to 10m as far as they knew. Fair enough the scopes seeing around 80 to 120 pellets a night for 40 nights a year, but they were still breaking. One 300 was retired for a PCP, and I put a Gerholdt and Russ onto the other. No further problems over the next few years.

A sick 300S will shoot a lot harsher than a nicely set up one.They can fairly thump and I saw this often in abused club guns.
If the action doesn't slide on the rails it will kick of course.Also if the the steel piston ring/compression cylinder are worn or the breech seal isn't working they can be very harsh.

Still even the ugliest one came up a treat after a rebuild!
