Custom 17 Ackley Build on CZ527 Hornet

Post by choppy2925 »

I am about to embark on a 17 Ackley hornet custom build on a new action - more then likley a CZ527.

I have the permit to acquire request in and am hoping to get it back shortly.

What barrel would you all recommend

Shilen, Hart, Mab, Maddco, douglas etc. and where would you recommend getting it from?

From what i can gather the 527 action seems to be the preferrence for this kind of conversion - or would you recommend something else.

Cheers

don't know who i will get to build it yet.

I want something that i know the history of - especially the barrel, a second had action wouldn't bother me to much.

You could buy a new Zastava Mini Mauser action for under $400. They come in Hornet boltface and magazine, and are a good base for custom builds.

Have a custom 17AH built on a Martini action. Great little round. Since picking up a BRNO ZKW465 Hornet I now have a BRNO Model 2 Fox Hornet which would be an ideal basis for the 17AH conversion. Please keep us informed on how the process goes, any trials, pitfalls advice etc. Would be greatly appreciated.

stick with the 527.

all the barrel makers you list are matchgrade with the exception of MAB

I have shilen, lilja, maddco and kreiger. Cant tell the difference between one match grade or another. One of my 527s sports a Lilja, the other a shilen.

You need to have a very very good reason not to get Shane Clancy to build your rifle.

My first choice would be a Anschutz M54 hornet action, second choice Micro Browning.

I will have a 17AH one of these days!

I went a 1949 ZKW 465 as it was going cheap. Most people (me included) dont like the double set trigger on them but from what I have been told its very easy for a gunsmith to install an M98 trigger, and there are some good ones around. I never had to do it as mine came with a single trigger. As for barrels I used a SS select match 3 groove Pac-nor and its a very nice barrel, no fouling even with 20gn bullets at 3800 fps and its really accurate with 5 shots often landing under 1/2" at 100 meters.

The Ackley hornet is a ripper little round, I sold my .17 HMR to help fund the build and I have never regretted it once. The beauty of it is I can use a light charge of Alliant 2400 with 20gn bullets and get 2900 fps which is just a bit better than the HMR, or I can load with AR 2205 and get 3800fps with 20's or push 3600 with 25's, making the little round effective to close on 250 yards.
