Unless you really want a 308 for any specific reason - go with the 25/06.

Any minor difference in the cost of ammunition will be forgotten as the 25/06 hits hard enough for most critters in this county and it is noticeably flatter than the 308 at any range.

Unfortunately factory ammunition is a bit anaemic for the 25/06 so it is a handload round for best performance.

that's a bit like saying "i don't know why everyone doesn't like the colour orange?"

but good luck with the cartridge. i'm sure it will do what you want it to do.

yeah i agree trevort.

i'm taking a back seat to the hyper velocity rounds simply because muzzle blast will ruin the rest of your hunting and probably you hearing too.

i'd rather learn how read distance, wind and allow for bullet drop.

.308. if your gonna reload you can load it smaller for varmints or load it big and take anything the country has to offer. i loev my .308 and bring it out any chance i can, no matter how small the target

I have owned/own both recoil between the two will largely depend on weight of rifle and projectile i found my .308 7600 with 150gn projectiles would kick a bit but i have a .25/06 heavy barrel mauser shooting 100gn projectiles which is a pussy cat to shoot but muzzle blast/flip is a bit more than the .308. If both rifles wieghed the same shooting the same weight proj id still take the .25/06 for flatter trajectory.

had a rem sendero 25-06 used with 75gr bts was an awesome long range varmint rifle it just wouldnt miss redcoats that thing. Talking about muzzle blast i fired a shot over the roof at a poor unsuspecting fox one arvo and found i had a massive circle like crack in the windshield lol so yeah it does have a bit of muzzle blast!

Haven't been on here for a while so missed this
I have what you are asking about and like it.
The Tikka shoots well and seems to match this round to a "T" (pun intended).
Muzzle blast is moderate and not as bad as a short barrelled 308 in my opinion.
If your shooting without hearing protection your an idiot.
The argument of muzzle blast down range scaring game is mostly BS with centerfires over .22 cal anyway as they all make a lot of noise and at 100m down range will sound very similar.
Ammo is reasonable but reloads are the way to go if you want your ammo to do justice to the round and rifle.
I lent my new rifle to my dad and had a battle to get it back he loved the thing and used it on varmints and light game.
I just shoot whatever presents itself and find it a very useful rifle.

Mate,

How much experience have you had with a centrefire? If you are just getting into shooting I don't think a 308 is right for you.

If you want something that can take a good range of game and has readily available factory ammo I have to say don't go larger than a 243 or you will have trouble shooting accurately, you could develop a flinch or close your eyes before you shoot because of the recoil.

Whilst the 308 would make a great 2nd gun I can't imagine recommending one as a newbie's first centrefire.

I'd be more inclined to recommend a 204, 223, 22-250 etc to you and tell you to have one of them and get a 308 when you are confident at shooting it. Just food for thought.
