Thinking 6mmXC?

Thinking of rebarreling my 22-250 into a 6mmXC, seems a good choice as i will get virtually an AI style case to battle the growing pains of the 22-250 and still use all my existing brass.
Rifle will be a spotlighting/play bench gun.
Barrel will most likely be an ex bench gun No7, taken back to 24", stock i will "adjust" myself to what i want.
Does anyone know if i can use 6.5x47Lap cases to form the XC? Reason i ask is if i am going to play with it on the bench then it would be nice to be able to form up some nice quality cases for range use only, keeping the factory 250 cases for paddock duty only (so i wont cry when i lose a lap case

).

wouldnt think so. Why would you not want a 6x47 Lapua if you want to use that lapua brass? I'm getting a 6x47 lap bench gun and when my 6/250 barrel wears out it will be a 6x47L spotlighting gun

Like i said, I'm not going to use the Lapua brass in the field, i will use the few hundred 22-250 cases i have here already and form them to the 6mmXC.
Lapua brass would be for target duties only, would just make it easier to sort etc, but no real biggy, they reckon the 2nd generation norma (XC) brass is pretty good too.

Problem with the 6-250 is i reckon it would have to stretch cases exactly the same as what the 22-250 does, something you and i both hate about the 250, wasn't your 22BRX a 22-250?

Paz with the price comparison between 6mm and .224 projies wouldn`t it be easier(read cheaper) to get your Local gun guru to AI the 250.Then when you wear that tube out go 6/250AI.

yep sure was mate, i dont think i would ever consider going back to a 22-250. Im reloading 55gr nosler BT's with 31.9gr of 2206H for 3588fps. Thats what a 22-250 can do but with 2.5-3gr less powder. God help my poor barrel if i actually loaded it up to semi warm charges. The same bullets go 3750fps with 34.5gr of 2208 and with the 10 twist barrel, they really explode on impact. Once this lot of 55's is gone (about 60 shots) i have another box of 60gr ballistic tips to try. Shouldnt be a problem getting them to 3650 with a warm load.
What i did realise is that using one barrel for spotlighting and f open work really doesnt work. Im going to keep this barrel for longer range daytime varminting with the heavier bullets, and have a 7 twist 22BRX for range work. Im not wanting to be ultra competitive but i dont want to ruin a range barrel out with fast varmint ammo. Night time spotlighting will see the 20 practical come into its own. I would recommend you keeping the 22 barrel there and shoot it out (what length is it and how old?- you could go to an AI chamber...) then get the 6mm barrel for bench stuff cos if the accuracy bug bites you like its bitten me, you will want to not just muck around on the bench.

G'day Paz,
go the 6x47mm lapua. here's why...............
1. mine shot 2 x 5 shot groups today in crap weather at little river Vic that went <0.6" at 150yds.
2. at 500m today 2 shots & both hit within 1 inch.
3. 1 pass with forster 6x47 FLS with off the shelf 6.5x47 lap brass and you're ready to reload (couldn't get any easier to source brass and dies regardless of cost)
4. small rifle primer (use a magnum) AND MORE IMPORTANTLY as SMALL flash hole to reduce pressure in primer pocket (reduces blown primers = increased chamber pressure and higher MV)
5. IT IS WHAT THE 6-250 SHOULD BE and would make a GREAT 22x47 (read: 22-250 AI) for varminting as if the 6x47 isn't a great round anyway................70gn Sierra MK fireforming loads went less than 0.4moa for 10 shots @ 100yds.

Shoots like a 6ppc
6. NEVER compromise on a custom rifle project as you will nearly always regret it.
It simply does NOT get any easier to form a wildcat that this. Great value for $$$$.
Best part is the difference between the 6xc and 6x47 is stuff all ballistically.
I'm biased if you cant already tell

paz,
If you want a rifle you can hunt with and play at comp matches as well then you are walking a fine line but I would say that the 6-6.5x47Lapua with a 10 twist barrel would be the best option. You can shoot 75grn varmit pills at high speed (probably even smaller pills) for varmits and 90grn Lapua or Berger for target without giving too much away to the guys shooting 105's.
The other option in my mind would be straight 6mmBR same barrel twist and results.
Then again the 6XC is a fine choice too. I dont know how you would go making the 6xc brass from 6.5x47L though.
I could probably dig up a few old 6x47L cases for you to tinker with if you like, let me know.
cheers
Rinso

Ned it is these sort of statements that make me go from a trued Remington in 243AI to a
Stiller Diamondback full custom in 6x47Lapua!!!!!
It is a varmint gun with a 1in12 barrel.
I am going to try target shooting and if I like it I will get a 1in8 and make it a switch barrel!
Careful Paz it is VERY dangerous path you are taking
I know from personal experience it can get expensive!
I ended up with 2 customs coming!!!
If it was me, 6x47Lapua!!
But like Ned I am biased!

Awwww gee fellas, now you got me thinking i am better off with the 6x47

.......
Now i know this is going to sound really stupid, but could you form cases for the 6x47 from a cheaper case, say maybe the 243win? Again reason is for paddock use, i do realize you would have to load these differently to the lapua cases, but I am happy to do that.

paz,
Yes you can make cases from cheaper brass but would end up with a large primer. I remember Tony Z making some from 308 brass so I would think 243 brass would work.
I would say though that you can use the old match brass, just because its no longer good enough for target work doesnt mean its no good at all.

Brad, I have my spotlighting rifle with a weak ejector so the cases fall out into my hand. With the other rifles I just eject slowly and cover the port with my hand to catch the cases. I use the best brass I can get (or afford at the time) and just look after it.

Wow paz you really are over thinking it!!!! Like Rinso said the 243 and 308 case
have large primer pockets! So it is not a 6x47L!
I brought 100 6.5x47Lapua pieces of brass about a month ago for $157.00.
I will buy some more at a later date and sort though them and pick some for targets
and the rest for varminting!
My 6x47L is a varmint gun so I will be using it in the feild!
The best advice I can give you,
POLICE YOUR BRASS
If you use lapua for target and then go back to OTHER brass for field work
you will notice the difference straight away and will end up using lapua in the end anyway!!!

Yeh i am huh, will see how the 6x47 feed in my action first, then will make my mind up between it and the XC.
Good point on the sorting though, guess i will only need about 50 for target use and the rest can be field use closely watched to start with
