Well, since I couldn't hit myself with a rifle when the pressure is on am thinking about upping my chances by getting a shotgun. I'm looking for the following and welcome all advice:

Under/Over
Ejectors
Manual safety
Can take slug and SGs without exploding
No (and I mean nil) scrollwork or fancy engraving on receiver or anywhere else
Single or double triggers - not fussed, so long as the transition is smooth

Will be cut down to 20" (heresy to the purist shotters, I know) for use as a coach gun for fox and bunnies close in/on the run, particularly when out spotlighting. Will put a fibre optic front sight on to give me a hand in that regard.

Total budget (including cut down work) $1200 - $1500.

Thoughts?

Buy a 2nd hand Rossi Coach Gun. Don't need to go crazy for that sort of shotgun mate.

Yep - have seen prices on 20" guns now and have revised my price expectations radically downwards - bit of an unexpected and pleasant surprise in today's expensive world...

No need to spend that sort of money mate, there is a pre-butchered Miroku on usedguns at the moment - they are asking $795 for it, but as you will probably be the only one interested you may be able to beat them down in price - a lot!

About 2/3 of the way down the page....Read the description, it has no choke, a real scattergun!

Or for about the same money you could get one of these and have 7 shots on hand.

Good idea and I don't mind the idea of a lever-action shottie - but these are potentially the ugliest guns I've ever seen. That plus the top/rear eject and the high bore centreline (must kick like a mule). I couldn't force myself to buy one. Anyone who gets around to designing an aesthetically pleasing, reliable lever shotgun would do quite well, I'd wager.

I'll probably get a Boito u/o coach gun and be done with it.

Used to have a Benelli M1 Super 90 back in the days of sanity. Now, that was a shotgun...

Mate if you reckon that lever action is ugly just cast your eyes over that abortion of a thing above it!!

They don't kick much either, they are only a bloody shotgun, an eight year old can (and does) fire mine - a coach gun won't kick any less.

What did they do to that poor miroku

Wonder what a new set of tubes costs for that miroku?

I think highland bring them in so hopefully not stupid amounts.

That miroku is an abortion - agreed. I'll get a Boito 20" coach gun and avoid major cost - and the partial amputation of a longer gun (which may be hurtful to some)

Speaking of hurtful, I can't help it if the shotgun hurts me It's not my fault - and that kjd's niece can do it without a problem just makes it worse! Where's the tissues?

I'll harden up one day.

Just use lighter loads - at the ranges you will be shooting, they are more than enough.

20" O/U with rifle sights, screw in chokes and choice of nickel or blued, also has 3" chambers for decent pig smashing loads.
