Yep,
if your feet lift off the ground and angels sing when you hold whatever rifle your looking at, don't let the a 222 chambering put you off! :D I loved mine and loved throwing 50gr Hornady SX projies out of it at Bunnies and Hares alike, not goats tho. Have heard of ppl using it for goats but i feel it falls on the far side of ideal unless you want to rock hop right up close to them with it..... :wink: :D

Cheers

I also have a 222 in the safe. Great little cartridge, no recoil and accurate.

I have 2 .222's... identical BSA Hunters, they are both great rifles that shoot superbly. One of them has 9 one-shot bang-flops on Fallow deer to its credit since bringing it to Australia. As for loads, any decent 50gr SP will handle goats and do the business on anything smaller. I am using a very old box of 50gr Norma SP's on Fallow currently and will switch to my old favourite 52 gr HP Match Hornadys for deer when they're gone.

I must be the od one out
I have a 222 rem, 22 hornet ,223 rem, thay never leave my gun safe as i think thay are a shit cal{if thay dident owe me money i'd throw them in the dam}

but every one has there own idears

I use to use my 223 rem for roo shooting.put a large barel on it custom trigger still a shit cal {for what i do any way}

being a full time roo shooter i need some time that shoots 100yds up 250yds max them cals drop to much

my mate that shoot with me on some nights uses a 222rem std and i can see the bullet droping after 100 yds,and on a windey night you mite as well throw the gun at them.

but thats my thorts i'dont mean to be a barsted

Don't have a .222 but would like one . In fact I spent 2 years trying to buy a good used Sako L 461 in that calibre without success . They all got snapped up very quickly after coming on the market . Bought a .17 in the end .
I don't have any real trouble on foxes out to 200 yards with my K Hornet so the .222 would have to be good for another 50 in the hands of a good shot .
OK so it might not be the perfect roo rifle but nobody here suggested it was .
Read somewhere recently that the .222 still holds the record for smallest group ever shot at 100 yards . Haven't tried to verify that but it was top of the benchrest heap for a lot of years . Certainly not far behind the .223 in terms of muzzle velocity with handloads . Nice to have something different too.

G'day pig007,
I was surprised to see your thoughts on the .222 for roo shooting, when I was jackerooing in western Qld in the late sixties, there was a permanent roo shooter on the property, (1200 sq miles) who used a sako .222 and handloads and he was the best shot I have ever seen when it came to consistency, he used a lee loader too. Once when he bought a new scope and was sighting it in, he put 5 shots into a postage stamp at 200yds, the boss was a monachist and threatened to call the cops as he had defaced a pic of the Queen on the stamp. :roll:
I can't remember him missing in all the times I went out with him, although wind was never an issue out in the channel country.
In contrast the manager had a sporterised .303/25 and I can't remember him hitting anything.
Begs the question, what do you find is the best caliber as a pro?

Hi kjd i new you would the first to say why

I use a parker hale 22-250 custom made done by 1 of the best gun smiths in aus bob tayler in lidsdale- near lithgow his been in the game
for that many years i could not count

he has built all my barels and triger mods for me for a price that no one at all can match.

the reason why is you have a look at the fps on these things thay are 300 fps faster than a 243 {with is a nother grate gun}the nock down power is not as big as 243 but i head shot any way and thay have a grate range even in the wind

little bit more cost to reload then 222 or 223 but well worth it

If you think you may be able prove me wrong {kjd} with your 222 i invite you to join me in one night roo shooting {head shots only}

I not being a smart ass

we all so have a game out here called sconer head shots beleave me the the pub loves when i play this game with all our new shooters {bring your wallet}

1 shot one kill{head shot} and its no like range shooting them heads on then roos arnt very big.well not when im finished with em!!!!!!

HI alpal

dont get me wrong, a lot of the roo shooter use a 223 out here.
I employ shooters at some parts of the year to shoot out the left side and spot light most of them use a 223.

but i give then a shot of my 22-250 and most of them say if thay were as cheep to reload as a 223 thay would buy one from how fast the fps is

but i have herd a lot of people say{22-250} thay are all bang and no go
depends on the shooter
did not mean to stur you all up either just my thorts!!!
And im not just talking about roo shooting i shoot for fox skins as well but i get my 308 out for the pigs
