.410 Shotty

Post by Buffy »

Fellas im looking at a break action in 22K hornet, it also comes with a .410 shotty barrel.

I have a couple of questions for ya's

1, what is the effective range of the .410 on small game such as rabbits and hares?
2, what is ammo like to buy? cost, different loads , availability
3, is it only a small game cartridge?
4, do they make solids for it?
5, would you go shooting pigs at close range with it, if so what load would you use?

Thanks in advance fellas

Cheers BB :hunting:

1 - Dunno never used one
2 - Pretty easy I'd almost say its the 2nd most popular gauge
3 - Refer to 4
4 - I believe they do make solids for it * I think.
5 - It pretty much has the same variations of different types of shot but it is the quantity of said shot that it lacks!

G'day BB, get the 410, they are a fun gun.
Ammo is dear I reckon compared to the 12g. I've dropped bunnies out to 30 mtrs no worries, cats and foxes at close range and plenty of pest birds.
Yes the do make solids, come in a pack of five.
I'd give the pigs a crack with the solids, but prefer a centre fire. :auto:

hey BB,
I have seen .410 solids around I think they were federal from memory but they were pretty expensive. I think the solids would be ok on pigs but you would have to close
hope this helps
cheers

ooooooohh mate, I haven't had a heap of experience with one (mucked around with one years ago) but my guess would be shooting a pig with one would result in one very pissed off pig!!! If you do get it and shoot a pig with it make sure you video it for us!!

1/ I wouldn't be confident past 25m, have shot animals beyond that but it's a bit hit and miss (lot to do with shot size). Is it 2.5 or 3 inch chamber? that will alter range if you can't use the 3inch bullets.

2/ Almost as much or as much as 12g.

3/ Yes, I know of people who use solids when culling meat cows.

4/ Yes (as someone else said). Most of the .410's I know have the barrel choke (as in the muzzle, not a removable one). You would also need the 'rifled projectile' because I'd guess it would not be a rifled barrel.

5/ With heavy shot - back of the head job, like if they were in a trap... but you can do that with a .22lr. Solids - not sure of the range, may as well use a C.fire I think.

A 12g may be a more versitile option, I see a few combos in 12 and .22 or small C.fire. I think the one you are looking at might be just the trick for bunnies at close range where they may run <25m from you. Depends on how much they are asking for it too.
