OAL too long for the magazine?! (help)

Hi fellas,
My Rem 700 in 204R's optimum load features an OAL that is too long for the magazine. To overcome this (in the short term) I removed the rear spacer so that they fit OK. This has now started to piss me off, so I looked into a price for a HS detach magazine system (which I have on my other 700) but almost had a heart attack when I saw NIOA's price (about the same as a new barrel!)
What is the best option:
1) get shane to recut the chamber and short throat it so i can reach the lands with a shorter OAL (which I would have to do for the HS system anyway), or
2) can the magazine be modified, eg put a 22-250 follower in it?
3) any other suggestions??!

Hi Feral buster
I have a brand new take of bottom metal set from a rem SPS tactical matte black to suit 308. $150 posted if you want to try it. If it wont work send it back. There is no spacer in the mag. I really dont want to break it up pm me if interested I could also do a trade in for your metal.
Regards Richard

Thanks Richard,
Rather than get you to post stuff around, you have given me the idea of catching up with a mate who owns a couple of rem 700's (308, 22-250) and we'll get his followers out and try them instead.
Cheers, FB

I was happy to forego the magazine in my 700 Sendero .25/06 by installing a benchrest follower from Scorehi Gunsmithing (U.S.). Turned it into a single shot rifle, with the option of removing the follower from the magazine to use rounds that would cycle through it. Simply fitted by opening the floorplate, dropping the benchrest follower and closing the floorplate with the standard follower still fitted.
Works a treat.

What a great idea!
Would be an advantage at Benchrest comps. I was watching a bloke on the weekend that wasnt thinking about what he was going and filled his mag and started to feed the rounds from the magazine. No score for him!
Will look into these for sure.

please explain why no score for him in a bit more detail??
I cannot find where it is prohibited from using a magazine in the BR rule book?

Not sure mate. RO just walked over, said "You know you can't do that", he removed his bolt, emptied the magazine and sat while the rest of the line completed there shots.
Why do I keep getting the feeling that the local SSAA range is nothing more then a bit of a joke?

I think some ranges are not magazine friendly and some are.

what range was this at??
what sort of comp was it??
Could it have been a local range rule that he broke- not a comp rule?

It was the Bundaberg branch.
I have had a few bad experiences at the range so far, mainly to do with questionable charecters.
Still, I am makeing the effort to get out there and enjoy. There are some top blokes out there as well.

I've never asked to see the rule book but all the comps I have been in are single shot only

oh, and to answer your question, I couldnt get anywhere near the lands with my factory ruger VT. I loaded to just fit the magazine like no leeway whatsoever and got excellent accuracy. From all reports, and my own experience the 204 seems very unfussy about jumping to the lands.

Hiwall, looks good, maybe I'll make one up on the milling machine one day- probably the one bit on a rifle i can fiddle with without stuffing it up too much!
Trev,
I did see you say that about your 204 on another thread. Encouraged, I did this with my rifle at the range on the weekend and it still shoots OK. 204 a bit more forgiving than my 22-250AI which wouldn't shoot unless you were a hair breadth off the lands (fussy bitch it was)
