I think you need more detail, walk around rifle, varminter, going to modify it later? semi custom when the barrels done in? How big is he? whats he going to shoot with it?

varmint rifle, heavy barrel preferable, 80kg bloke. Would it be worth considering .204 ruger if not handloading? Im still advising .223 but has mentioned his intrest in this cartridge.

I'll take a stab in the dark and assume you have ur less then and greater then symbols backwards.... Im guessing u meant less then a grand right?

red mist is another option, i think jase was looking at one a while back

Dont get the redmist mate!!!

Get a Ruger VT 22-250. you will get one for very close to that price. I think mine in 223 was 1060.

I was wondering about the > 1k, I was thinking 'shit, buy 2 or 3' but my answer was going to be 'I like the look of a kimber in the profesional varminter' but that would be an expensive rifle i suspect.

Under 1k, well the tikka is always rated well by owners, but that doesn't
say much, I liked the feel and fit and don't own one, my Howa is the shit,
but like I say, owners have a tendency to fall in love with their own shit
and tell people, you could look at jb747's 22-250, that would be a nice
rifle to own, and if you wanted or considered rebarrelling an option in the
future, you would be nuts to pass it up.

I'd say you are looking at a cz527 if you can get it at that price, a howa, tikka or rem SPS, I'd be temped by the tikka, howa,cz in that order. If you haven't tried shooting (or he hasn't) past 200m, then get the .223

Dave you could do much worst with your mates $$ than have a look at JB747's 22/250.
It is A1 class and far and away better than anything you will get for less than a grand.

I have a jap made bushnell 6-18 AO varmint scope that could go on it and you made is setup fom 40-400 yards.
