Next Varminter setup?

Post by Tez »

I'm really going to need another varminter in the near future  .

I have my 270Wby(Lightest cal I own at the moment  ) coming later next year.So I can see I will be needing something a bit smaller, for when I don't want to blow farm pests up.Or should I say blow them up a little less    .

At the moment I'm looking into these cal's.
22Hornet
222Rem
223Rem
22-250Rem
224Wby
220Swift

Varmint's of choice are mainly foxes, rabbits, pest birds, wild dogs(Rarely) & other farm pests(No need to mention these as we all know them)

Which one boys & why?

If you want to stick with 22 cal then I'd probably go the 22-250. It is an inherently accurate cartridge, has factory ammo available and is probably the most capable of the list you mention (except the 220 Swift which is becoming obsolete (maybe??) and is hard on barrels? and the 224 Wby which has expensive factory ammo but otherwise on a par).

However, the 223 is slightly quieter, about 400 fps slower, cheaper to run (less powder, smaller and cheaper cases, etc), has cheap factory ammo available and is just as accurate. Slightly less recoil too.

Nothing against the .222 or Hornet. They are both worthy in their own right. However the hornet is limited in capability and range and the .222 is merely a lesser .223 (In my opinion - I'll probably get lambasted for this comment but anyway!!)

And if you wanted to venture into 20 cal territory, then there's the .204 ruger and several wildcats available. Check out the 20 and 22 cal pages on http://www.6mmbr.com.

Part of the fun with a new rifle is the selection process me thinks - enjoy!!

Are you going to build this or just buy off the shelf?

The 20s are good fun, and do more than you might expect. Probably don't quite live up to the hype, but close enough.

And some of the small 6mms are very impressive, and easy to live with:
6*45 (6/223)
6*47 (6/222 Rem Mag)
6/250 (6/22-250)

Not sure as yet but I dare say I will go new.

Mmmmmm 204Ruger,don't know about that  .

At the moment I'm leaning towards the 224Wby,220Swift & the 22-250Rem.
Had a 22-250Rem in a CZ 550,farrrrrk that was one sweet shooting rig with 55gn Ballistic Silver-Tips  .

Tez what rifle platform are you planning on using??

Knowing what action you plan to put it in might help with the selection.
A 223 Savage Varminter would make a great base for a 22 BR- with the factory 1:9 re-chambered and a new bolthead some lapua brass and you have 22/250 performance using less powder etc etc
BUT
if you hate the savage platform it's not much of an option??

later

Yeah isn't that like the only one in australia? If so I don't like your chances of that greedy weatherby pig giving it up  :D

look at the 20 cal page on 6br if you are a speed freak. The 20br launches the 50 gn berger at 3800 fps with less long range drop than the 6br. Sure to be a barrel burner but if I was confident I could form the brass then an XR 100 rebarelled in this calibre would be high on the agenda.

Tez we all know you love Weatherbys, why are you even asking, just go find that 224 or maybe a 240!

Dave,

Unless you get the twist set up for the light 6.5 bullets they wont get to the target with a 6.5/300wsm. I know a Fly shooter who cant get 140 Amaxs to the target over 3400fps.

Kenny tried light bullets in his 6.5/284 and the only one to get to the target is the first one out of a clean barrel. Got it on video on my phone. You can see the bullet turn into grey dust less than 50yds out.

Interesting Dave.

"Looked at from a varminter’s point of view, this cartridge will give you about 100 fps more than the 220 Swift"
