Bipod technique and the Remington PSS.

Post by Ackley Improved »

For the last couple of months I have been searching for the best technique for myself when shooting off bipods.

I feel now that my technique is working, and would like to share it!

Here it is

1. Adjust the height of the bipod legs for your given range (read step 2 before doing this)
2. Grip the sling and swivel under the butt of the rifle, making a fist. Your fist should be relaxed in a comfortable position. This step and step 1 go hand in hand when setting up.
3. With adjusting the legs and having your hand comfortable, the crosshairs should sit below your target.
4. I hold the rifle tight and pull it into my shoulder, and my cheek is firmly on the rifle butt.
5. I move my body forward slightly, loading up the bipod legs with a little pressure.
6. Looking through the scope, as I exhale I relax my hand under the butt. This bring the crosshair closer on target. There will be a natural pause on your breathing and at this point your hand under the butt stops.
7. You can time the breathing and relaxing of the hand so it pauses on your target.
8. This is the point when I sqeeze the trigger. (I concentrate on my triiger pull here as well)
9. I hold the rifle the same through recoil, trying not to move.

This works for me well.. give it a try...!!!!!

Since doing this my consistancy in groups has improved dramatically off bipods.

By repeating this for each shot, it removes any other small thing you do that may not be consistant.

Here is todays effort at the range.

First picture is at 100m. Bottom group is 3 shots, measures 0.35" Top group is 5 shots measuring 0.55". That includes the flyer out to the left. (couldn't beleive it, was last shot). The 4 shots excluding the flyer is 0.31".

Second picture is 300m. Was ment to be 10 shots but lost count and only fired 9. Mirage was bad couldnt count. The two on the left was my crosshair position, as I was holding off. They went straight (conditions????)!! The other 7 shots are in 1.81".

Lots of guys like to put their left hand under the butt when using a bipod but I'm not one of them . Find I get consistent zero with all variety of holds by hanging onto the fore-end and pulling the recoil pad into my shoulder .

That pretty impressive shooting off a bipod -very consistant results.
It made me think of this article : http://www.6mmbr.com/TacticalFroggyA1.html which I thought you might enjoy.
How about a bunny ear rear bag under the butt ? It would be a very stable platform with out the complications of the sling especially in a field situation. Then set the crosshairs dead on and shoot.
