6mm build, what cal?
So I have a 14 twist 6mm barrel sitting on the shelf and it keeps looking at me funny. I've spent some time today thinking of the options and formed up a few dummies with a 75gr V-Max, if they don't stabilise I'll go with 65's or 58's.
From left to right...
6mm-06AI
6mm-284win
243AI
6mm Creedmoor
6mm XC
I dont have a long action laying around so I was more leaning towards a short action calibre but building a long action has been a though for a while now.
If I used a 284 case it would have to be a shehane as luke has that reamer. I already own a Creedy and XC, just with faster twists.

Definitely 6mm Shehane.
6mm/06 imp is for people called Walter or Orivill and have a pension card.
6 Creedmore, come on Seddo, you don't kiss men and wear a man bun.
6XC. Nope similar to above but slightly nerdier.
284 Shehane though will fit in a short action, offers good ballistics and not have people doubting your manliness.
Oh yeah, and your gunsmith has a reamer..

Seddo while i may agree with Rod on the man bun thing regarding the 6.5 Creedmoor, the 6 mil version has to be my pick and would be if i didn't have so much 6x47 Lap stuff.
Not overbore, heaps of grunt and i know you will do it most likely using AI type mags, the OAL is well within the magazines dimensions. Failing the CM, i might go 6 SLR. What the 243 should have been.
As to the 6 Shehane or 6/284, neither your arse or your elbow. Too long for a standard action, too short for the long action. Feeds very poorly in a short action without serious fucking around with action rails and some types of magazines. Doesn't double stack properly in AI type mags. A serious fuck.
The Shehane has similar capacity to the already well overbore 6/284 but has a tighter base dimension to help keep primer pockets live longer. Little gain for a shorter throat life of maybe less than a thousand rounds of useful accuracy. 6/06 is same. The three of them need longer barrels to take advantage of the slower powders and bigger capacity. The 6.55x55 version could be lumped in there as well. The SLR is borderline, but the CM and 6x47 can deliver fast speeds in a shorter barrel. Bit like the 280 and 7mmRM. In a 24 inch barrel, there is little between them.
One i did many years ago was a 6/6.5×55 IMP or similar to the 6mm Vias. Somewhat slower ballistics to the 6/284 but without the feed issues and a throat life of around 1500 rounds tops. Again in that never never for action length, but probably better suited to a long action.
I did many versions on the 284 case from a couple of variations on the full length then down to a 2 inch, 1 3/4 inch, 1.6 inch and 1.5 inch. The best by a mile for accuracy was the 1.6 version. A case full of 2206, or the original 2201, with a 68 Kats shot a 1.1 inch 10 shot group at 500 meters during one of our practice Fly rounds. I screwed the 13 twist Tobler barrel out to preserve it. That was in 96 and it has never been used since.
Below is a pic of my current 6SLR, 6X47 Lap, 636, the old 6/284×1.6 and 6BR. The gap is where the CM would sit.

Re: 6mm build, what cal?
I was wondering when the 6SLR would get a mention. I prefer the AI version, I know it has issues as well but it looks sexy. I have a few AI calibres for that reason.Tony Z wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 1:21 pm Seddo while i may agree with Rod on the man bun thing regarding the 6.5 Creedmoor, the 6 mil version has to be my pick and would be if i didn't have so much 6x47 Lap stuff.

My 6mm CM is shooting a 108gr a little over 3000fps. I haven't done a lot of testing with it yet. You are correct when you say it will be run out of AI mags, the right its going in doesn't have feed lip so its mag use only. I was thinking of using it in one of the single shots but then it wouldn't be a fun calibre to use on targets.

Doesn't the question, in the topic heading, answer itself ??
