Tikka 55 tight arse buildup $325 plus scope

Post by kickinback »

I've been reading the posts in this forum for many months now and thought i would share my tight arse 22.250 buildup with you.

I have had this rifle for around 13 years and it was purchased second hand. Over the last few years my good friend X WSSM has had the accuracy bug bite and it has rubbed off a bit on me.

The main reason for the buldup was failing accuracy with groups opening up to over 2 inches at 100 metres.

Discussions started with the idea of a new barrel and see where that takes us when X WSSM rang and said there was a 22.250 barrel off a Rem vssf for sale on AV. A PM was sent and 5 days later a well packaged barrel arrived in the mail (thanks Chris).

After removing the barrel and comparing the threads it was time to put the barrel in the lathe, so X WSSM made up a dummy case to fit in the chamber to allow the barrel to be held between centres so all machining was parrallel to the bore.

Before we could calculate headspace I wanted to machine the action surface that the barrel would come up against because it was a knife edge and i wanted a larger bearing surface.

The only problem was how to hold it.

Into the stash of chrome moly bar did X WSSM go and next thing you know he is machining up a mandrel to hold the action parallel so we can machine the mating surface.

The pic below is the action on the mandrel prior to machining.

The next step we took was to set the barrel up between centres and cut a new thread and reduce the barrel diameter at the breach end to match the action. While X WSSM was doing this i lapped the locking lugs on the bolt and trued the bolt face.
