After trying to fix this damn feeding issue of my post 64 Win Mod 70 that I had rebarrelled from 22-250 to 308 I have decided to go back to 22-250rem after purchasing my 270 it seemed like the smartest idea so I have a working rifle and one that is gorgeous thanks to MISSED’s handiwork in refinishing my stock.

So I dropped the rifle off to Gunsmith Graeme Dunnet who is newly based in Goulburn on Tuesday and asked him to fit a stainless 1in9 or 1in8 Bergara barrel chambered in 22-250rem in a medium shorter barrel which will act as a walk around varmint and fallow deer rifle which is what I am after for around my parts.

I am considering getting the stainless barrel cerakoted blue to match the action but I’ll make that call when I see it.

I am planning on shooting 77gr Sierra TMKs or 75gr Amax which seem to do well on whitetail and mule deer in the states in AR-15s so the extra velocity from the 250 should really do well.

As far as optics are concerned I want something in the 3-15x range with the Sightron STAC 3-16x42 standing out as a front runner at the moment. Unless I can find a nice used Zeiss HD5 3-15x. I am open to suggestions on this but would like something that I can dial in to reach out to 500yds to take advantage of the heavy pencils I plan on shooting when I want to.

Sometimes I think I should have left well enough alone and left it as it was but with that said this will make the rifle more versatile than it was originally.

Anyway looking forward to getting this thing shooting well and having a rifle that is pretty much perfect for any type of game that I will find in my neck of the woods.

Seeing as you’re the owner of ausvarmint I had hoped you would have gone for something a little more exotic, something needing fireforming maybe, or necking down from another case. 22-250AI for instance, getting those heavier pills motivated. Maybe a 22x47, nice long neck on them, or something new and funky like a Valkyrie.

Well when it comes to the 22/250 I am sitting on the fence.

I have owned a couple and will they are alright their not as good as the 220 Swift (which uses more powder)

Or my 20 PPC (which uses less powder)

BUT as an "AI" I think they are a different proposition a fast twist and launch 60 - 75 grainers

I am happy to see you still have that special rifle

The 220 swift is King but a fast 22-250 or 22-250AI is a Prince.
I love my 22-250AI in any barrel tist 14 through to 8.
It or the vanilla one will do exactly what you are after.
The TMK pills are good. when I ran them in Misit's 220 improved in 1:8 twist they were accurate and deadly.(69 grain)
The Amax have long been my go to long range hunting bullet in a lot of different calibers. Usually perform well on most game. The amax is no longer made and has been replaced by the ELD. different tip that is supposed not to melt as was claimed the polymer A max did.
I haven't shot out my Amax supplies yet so can't comment on the effectivness of the ELD's.

Sounds like 6mm/08 would have been the perfect chambering

Nothing wrong with a .22-250.

Sure there are all sorts of cartridges that can shoot a little bit flatter or range a little bit further or burn a bit less powder, but for a bog standard cartridge that is available in pretty much every shop in Aus that stocks ammo, and shoots really well with easy to find pills and ADI powders, what's not to like?

I took mine out last night a nailed a couple of foxes with it. Love it, it just works.

Mate I will never get rid of it, it was given to me by my uncle and made even more special when you worked your magic on it. I love the thing and it was killing me that it was sitting in the safe and somewhat unusable. Which is why I decided to go 22-250rem just so I know it will work as it should.

I’m not a tinkerer mate, I’ve become very utilitarian with my guns. I like to get something that works, develop one load for it and have it be reliable and work every time. Fireforming cases and buggering around sourcing readers and dies and the like doesn’t interest me unfortunately.

I did! Also sold my 260, 7mm08 and now rebarrelling my 308. My biggest regret was selling my CZ550 30-06.

If I can get this Steyr 270 sorted I’m not getting rid of it.

Keith I really think you need to get that Stock back to as I am sure it will need a touch up.
