Yeah not a 222 Mag but a 204 expanded to take .224 cal projectiles.
222,223 222mag and 22/204
Case capacities are Remington 204 case necked up 33.5.
Remington 222 mag 31.5
Lapua 223 AI 32.5
Lapua 223 30
All are grains of water
The 22/204 has a 3 grain advantage over the 223 and 1 grain over the 223AI.
I reckon a 50 grain Vmax should attain 3600fps

The reason I would lean to the 22/204 is brass quality.
222 Rem mag brass is scarce on the ground with Remington or Sako the only suppliers that I can find.
While the 204 Has quiet a few including Norma and Hornady.

I thought the Sako 222 mag brass was made by Norma. Isn't the the 22/204 just a 222 mag AI?

First part, it could be, but dont know, second part, no it is very different, 22/204 is just necked up, where as a 222Mag AI keeps the same neck length, which is longer than 204 brass, and has a 40 degree shoulder and minimum body taper, 22/204 has a 30 degree shoulder and keeps the same body taper as the 204 case. I dare say that the capacity would be very close with the two cases, would only be a grain or so in it.

Rather than me rubbing people the wrong way i gleaned this off a US forum on this very discussion on a 22/204 when looking for information on my 222 length neck on a 223 case i was doing. It sums up exactly my beliefs on such issues. I will say though that a single pass of 204 cases through a 222RM FL die solves any issue of brass availability for a 222 RM.
"first of all the 50 grain bullet will be way over stabalized in a 1:9 barrel, thus compounding any error manufactuered in the bullet. I wouldn't go much lower than a 60 grain bullet, or a very long 55 grain bullet. The longer necks have been proven thruout the years to produce tighter groups, but just as importantly also proven to have a much better barrel life. (keeps the vortex of the flame out of the throat). If it were me, I'd build a nice 22BR or a .224BG and be miles ahead of the game"

Not everyone wants to chuck out long skinny bullets, I reckon the 22/204 would be good with a 1-12, maybe 1-10 then just lob 55 or 60 gn bullets all day.

I would think it's the bloke that was quoted off the US forum,
How does the 22 204 compare to a 22 PPC?
I know a 50 gn VMax will shit in 3600fps.

Similar case capacity
I imagine the ppc would out perform the
22/204 due to the extra strength in the case

I like the long neck theory. Its why I ended up with my 20 tac wannabee. could you ai the 222mag to change the shoulder angle to increase case capacity while retaining the long neck?
22/204 is pretty common these days ( well in murica anyway)

Interesting i was thinking along these lines but 222 vs ppc case but in 6mm. The 222 mag would be similar but apparently long skinny cases are no good anymore.
