here we go again....

Post by trevort »

you regulars will have read my ongoing rifle building saga and laughed at some of twists and change of mind that happens frequently. So have another laugh and feel free to express an opinion on the question.

well, my "light varmint' 204 was going in a Slee stock. Changed my mind, had always wanted a synthetic thumbhole, couldnt get one I liked so bought the wood, then saw the A5. Wood stock has a buyer.

I ordered a heavy 20 cal barrel 6 mths ago, 1 in 10 twist for a heavy varminter to shoot the 40s. After shooting a couple of comps the heavy varmint idea was dropped in favour of a PPC target rifle. I then changed to 6ppc and was going to store the heavy krieger 20 cal barrel.

In the mean time I have tricked up my 223 and have a 17 mach fireball nearly ready,

SOOOOOO....... the A5 stock arrived this morning. It is a quality bit of gear. It has some weight in it and a relatively wide fore end. I knew it was inletted for a varmint profile barrel before I ordered which was the price to pay to get it quickly. In short this is too good a stock to make a light carry varminter with. The No 5 profile barrel will look lost in the wide channel any way.

So what to do.......

First thought is wait till the heavy Krieger comes as I always wanted a really heavy 204 so you can see all the action on any scope setting,

Shane laughed at me of course, I change my mind so often but he could switch my no 5 Lilja for a rem varmint profile as they are an off the shelf item from Lilja and not a special order. Then I keep the Krieger and build the single shot 20ppc i was toying with (next year as I'm broke now)

Or I could use the no 5 to rebarrel the 223 into 20 prac, but then I have just tricked it up and though I think 20 cals are the ducks nuts, this 223 obviously works.

Shane can use the Lilja barrel for another customer if I choose to wait for the Kreiger so I save some $$.

So would you rebarrel a 223 to 20 cal just cos you hve the barrel?, would you use the A5 for a heavy varminter like I think I should?

I must admit I am statring to think it may be logical to let the no 5 barrel go.......

Mate i am so confused trying to follow your train of thought

If i was a bank or credit card company (or a custom rifle component manufacturer for that matter) i would hire a minder to just come around and make sure you didnt hurt yourself.

keep it up trev

ps if my plans come to fruition i may have a need for that lilja barrel

Oh, Trevort, there's no hope for you; you're done and dusted, mate.
i can sympathise, my riflelist is as follows:
22LR Sportco single shot
22LR Sako m78 varmint (much modified- never to be sold)
17REm Ruger #1
22.250AI fly rifle (ugly!)
300 whisper (Brno 602 short action)
308 Scout rifle (3 X 10 round mags; is that enough?)
300 WSM Ruger #!
416 short mag (416 AS, Weatherby Vanguard action)
no shotty, yet; no Air arms, yet;
BUT...

Trev

Its good to have choices!

I'm not sure I would rebarrel a .223 that was shooting well, just because I had the barrel. Having an accurate .223 is handy I reckon.

I think if I were you, I would give up the No. 5, wait til the Krieger arrived and play with it instead in your A5(?) stock. Could start out as a 20 Prac. Then move easily to 204 Ruger because it's a slightly longer, fatter case and a simple rechamber job. Then could go to 20BR after that by shortening the knox (?) and another rechamber. The bedding would obviously not have to change if all you were doing was rechambering. Not sure about magazine follower.

A full on 20 cal varminter would be niiiiiiice.

ok
I have read it three times now and my brain is trying to get out of my skull to get away from the confusion.

May be it might be better Trev if you went through what you have and what you want to achieve and we can mix and match your bits to get you the result you want and what evers left over you can sell off.

but please don't touch that 527 in .223.
please dont touch it.
shoot it an enjoy it- it's a ripper and I'd cry if you pulled it apart.
your other post says it all- it works and it aint broke so please dont touch it.

How heavy profile is the Kreiger you have on order and how long before it gets here?

If it was me I d build the Heavy Kreiger into a .20 cal varminter using the A5 stock- what action would you use for it? the 6/250 action or another R700 or the Predator action you have on order?
looking on the lilja site a #5 profile is a bit heavy for a walk about varminter like the 223 is now.

If SC can make use of the Lilja it might be worthwhile letting him use it and savign some $$ towards the A5 built rifle
once the A5 rifle is sorted you can compare/contrast it to the 527 and see what roles they cover and then where you gaps are- and then build something to fill the gap.

Whats the BAT being made into?
Whats the Predator being made into?
How many R 700's actions do you have avail and what do you plan for them?
Are you keeping the WSM?
What about the lever 22lr

Maybe I need to come down with a couple of tinnies and you talk me through your thoughts and plans and that means i can also get out of the house for a while and talk real things not baby clothes and what present we can give Mrs Ogres cousin for their birthday- we can save each other really.
I also want to have a sticky at the A5- please

please

Later

sheesh trev, its a wonder you have any complete rifles at all sounds like most of them are in bits. :-)

and I thought I had a dilemma of deciding between 6BRX and Dasher. Pales into non-existance in comparison to your dilemma's mate.

Trev,

I have said it before and I'll say it again ...

YOU ARE A DEAD SET WORRY SOMEDAYS

I think .. not that you listen to me anyway .. that

1. You should stop starting new projects till you get the current ones completed.

2. You should sit down when you have your current projects and look at what you need to fill gaps rather than double up.

3. Sell off parts that are not attached to an existing project.

4. Take a deep breath.

Anyway you do what makes you happy at the end of the day and that is fair enough too.

cheers

Enjoy shooting your 223 , wear the barrel out then do something. Cheap to run and accurate.

I've been out on an all afternoon corporate lunch (to a restaurant with waitresses in skimpy underwear, fuck i have a great job) I made the mistake of going to a party afterwards where serious young folk were raising money for a school in Cambodia. Not the best environment for a pissed 41 year old.
Well I had to come back to the office to get my keys (no I'm not stupid enough to be driving but I gotta open the door when I get home) so I thought I would sign on. I am glad i can give you guys some amusement, I laugh at myself too you know. Who would be dead for quids.

You guys really make me laugh.

Kenny apparently when I was a little kid I was an absolute horror. it was before they had kid car seats and I wouldnt go to sleep. My dad made a wooden box that fitted on the back seat and drove me around until I went to sleep. Gotta get home to see my dad, if I can use my card for all these toys then i can get on a plane too. Yeah done deal.

Rinso, since you do the same job my Dad did I have to have some respect for you and allow you to tell me off and ask me to wise up from time to time, its what friends do isnt it?

Right, I have no excuses anymore. I wanted to keep my super and give the other assets to my wife. The bigger the debt I had the better that deal looked. I lodged the docs with the family court today ( with the help of one of our members who proves that not all lawyers grow taller when they take viagra) so I cant give myself the excuse to go further into debt to save my retirement. Time to straighten up.

I gotta keep the 223 as is. I have a 17 mach fb coming, thats supposed to be my rabbit rifle. The 6/250 is the legal roo culler. I dont need another walk around rifle. it seems the only logical action is to put the krieger together with the stiller predator and A5 and make the heavy varmin 204.

You know i knew this all along but I like the chance to make you guys laugh.

Well, mr pissed has to sign off and get a train and then walk 3/4 hr home. If I dont post again the Sudanese refugees who are terrorising Noble Park got me on the train or I woke in the morning and read this sober and was too embarassed to post again! Ah well who GAF, you can take your self too seriously, Arch you are not allowed to say I need a root, i have a date to the Cox Plate
