G'day all.

I find myself thinking about a nice, gentle, flat shooting cartridge for under the light, and keep coming back to a 20 cal of some description. The question I then find myself asking, is are all these wildcats really worth the effort over a standard 204? Talking in regards to case prep, etc. I keep looking at a 20-222 or maybe a 20vartarg (although this is less likely, as I don't think it'll feed well out of a cz 223 length magazine)

Happy to hear your thoughts on this one, as I don't really know where to go from here, could always just go with a longer barrelled 223 to get muzzle blast away from me a bit too...

Camel will be along shortly to extoll the virtues of the 20/222. I personally have a Vartarg and think it's the best thing since my Tikka trigger mod.

18.5gr of 2207 pushing a 32 zmax for 3850fps. You cam make cases the easy way or the hard way. Easy way is 221FB brass, hard way is 223/222 brass. I quite enjoyed making the cases from 222 lap brass.

Jacko9, the CZ223 mag will feed the VT case OK but it is a nuisance to load the mag as you are pushing the next round down on the neck instead of the body of the round in the mag, if that makes sense. Putting a spacer in the back of the mag is one way of fixing it.

I waited and found a CZ 222, the mag is shorter.

How about loading some lighter pills in the 223, 40s flat out. You have a nice rifle try some different loads first.

As Kickin said about making brass, you either enjoy the process or not up to the individual.

I failed on my previous post, didn't recommend getting another rifle . What was I thinking.

I am sort of in same position at moment. I have a cz 527 223 that has been sitting in safe. I want a walk about rifle for shooting under spotlight. The cz doesnt give enough cheek support for the 50mm scope I have. Was just going to buy a new 223 rifle to suit scope but couldn't really find something that I reallly liked so now have on order a thumbhole stock for cz. Going to re barrel to something a little heavier and longer at 24 inch maybe number 3 barrel.
The decision I need to make is 223 shooting 40 grn noslers or 20 practical or 20/222 both shooting 40 grn vmax. So will be watching this thread

I have a 20 Tact necked down 223 making cases is a piece of piss the only problem I have is the 32 Zmax are a bit fragile for some pests you are likely to be spotlighting. BTW I love my 20 cal but would take my 223 spotlighting said pests.

20/222 or 20 Practical, both easy and simple to make and just work. But for bulk shooting, I would stick with the 223 and if you want to have a change occasionally, use a different bullet.

It is a no brainer Jacko keep the 223

Then grab another CZ just get it rebarreled in 20 cal chambered for the 20/223 (easy access to brass and a bushing die will do both)

Then get a 22/250 and AI it just for the maybees.

Also you could get a CZ 7.62x39 and rebarrel to 6mm AR or 6.5 grendel.

Andrew that's just stoopid. Everyone knows you need a Howa mini if you want a Grendel.

Jacko I like wildcats. I like not being able to buy factory ammo. Gives me a false feeling of superiority lol. I also enjoy the brass prep. Well I did years ago as you only have to do it once.

If I was to do it again I would do a 20 tac again in a heartbeat. My JAB 20 is essentially the tac 20 you get when you don't have a tac 20 reamer. As Gary says, one pass through the die and you get a little longer neck and the 204 ruger shoulder angle.

But back to your original question. No it won't be better than a 204. I would be shooting the 40 Gn pill flat out if I was you so the bigger case of 223 204 has an advantage in speed. Alliant re 10x seems to be the magic formula for 223 cases. Mine pushes the 39 sbk as fast as my 204 pushed the 40vm with its accuracy load of 2206h.

I'd run the 204Ruger reamer in far enough to headspace off 222Rem brass and cut the dies to suit then, shoot only 32gr pills. I'd look on it as a rabbit, fox, hare gun, very odd pig when I can hit it in the scone. If pigs, goats, roos under permit were a requirement, I would stick with the 223Rem as well.

Matang you have used 20 Cals so you're choice should be easy, shouldn't it?

Having said that I've wanted a 20 dasher forever. The action is nearly here after 2 years and the smith has the reamer. So why spend half a night comparing the straight 20br online.........
