Went to the local gunshop today and put a PTA in for a Marlin 17hmr to hopefully finish my basic rifle collection. What are people's thoughts?

I've got a CZ .22
Howa .223
12ga shotty

Just looking into it for the distance I can get to rabbits now.

Sounds like a good fit with your calibre line up, just need something around .30 cal for the big stuff and your set.

Having a .22, HMR and .223 myself I think the HMR slots in nicely.

Good start. Mate has a Marlin rimfire, they are not too bad. A little rough and agricultural but accurate enough and reliable

You should get a twin for the 22, CZ make a very nice HMR I had a varmint for work, shot very well with Federal premiums, it was my hare rifle, but seeing as there is no market for them and I have a centre fire for foxes, I sold it to a mate who wanted it more than me.
Varmint barrels are the go.

Any gun safe should have room for a 7mm or 30 cal of some description, or both

I used to have a .270 in the collection as well but sold it due to never ever using it.

I got one for my young bloke a while back, synthetic stock, heavy barrel, goes well, good honest rifle, and I'm far from a 17hmr fan, we did take it to the local gunsmith and spent the best $50 you'll ever spend, and had the trigger done. Put some good mounts and a reliable scope on it and you'll have a ball with it.

One tip, we have found is sort through your ammo and sort the crap out with any split necks/shoulders, before shooting, keep the duds and take them back to the gunshop when you have a box full, you generally get threee or four to a packet. We had a few instances of misfires, hang fires and even projectiles being propelled 3-4 inches up the spout, every time it was a cracked case.

CCI stuff mate, I don't know how true it is but some say all the brass comes out of one or two main manuacturing plants, CCI was what we got the best groups out of, tried CCI , Hornady , Remington and a mate gave me half a box of Winshitter, and man didn't that stuff shoot all over the place , out of this rifle anyway.

Most of the ammo brands I've used have been pretty good, except Remingturd, my CZ Varmint hated it with a passion so I've never bought it again.
