308/Scope combo
My boy turns 21 later this year.Thinking of getting him a new canon for the big day.He lives in Dalby QLD now and works as a stock n station agent.Weekends are spent in the bush chasing pigs with dogs, drinking, roedo's or chasing the fairer sex. .After a yarn on the phone he wouldn't mind having a crack at a bigger caliber for pigs and may be a deer if one presents it's self,he shoots a Weatherby sportier in 22/250 with a 4-16 scope now and love's it. Was thinking a 308 rifle in varmint style with a 6-20 power scope would fit his needs,it's out of the truck not carry.Point blank to may be 500 yards would be his ranges on game or the odd target.Thinking,Howa or Tikka for the rifle.Caliber 308 cos it's not barrel burner like magnums.Great availabily of ammo and components.unsure of scope ATM for around $500?Do I go standard scope reticle(duplex) or Bdc or click for ranging.?..Any help /sugestions would be appreciated.Cheers George

Re: 308/Scope combo
realistically, how far does he shoot now. Will he need bells and whistles for ranging?
If 95% of his shots are within 200 is it worth spending money (or sacrificing quality to get to the price limit) to get the go fast bits he rarely uses?
Just a thought.

Just a thought.[/quot. Couldn't agree more..plan Jane reticle now.
Stretches Out to 400 with Sierra 55 grain spbt#1365 traveling around 3500 fps with the 22/250 now with cross hair dot scope in the day time, 200 -250 at night with HID light with the same rifle.Sited in at 200,-6" at 300 and -17" at 400 give or take.I'd say if your in his sights at 300 ,9 out 10 times, lights out.He does use my range finder a bit when he remembers. after some disappointing trips, he says, wish I had a rifle to punch the shit out stuff out at 5-600meters.(fallow ,pigs)Didn't take a shot, just not confident of a good kill shot.A scope with some type of hash marks or mil dot would help with ranging and aim reference and may be target turrets .Being only 20 with good eye sight has allowed him to use cheaper glass ,me with my 53 year old eyes.Ziess dura lite's in 3-12 x 50 for spot light work and Ziess conquests in 3.5-10 x 50 n 4.5 -14 x50 day time shooting.I'd say ranging and using some sort of balistic program would be right up his alley for some long distance stuff.Bought him a Sako 85 223 last year for his birthday this year, still in box unfired. He says 223 shooter sit down to piss compared to 22/250 shooters. :roll:If it gets to hard,I'll buy him a carton of bundy and a sling shot. I like his sister more
. :DCheers George

Big G,
I would highly recommend the Zeiss Consquest 4.5-14x50 for such a job - sounds like you also like them! I just got the 6.5-20 from the US and the quality of the glass is awesome. Not that dear from the states either.
As Trevort said, get the best, it's a lifetime investement then.
Regards,
CZ550

Re: 308/Scope combo
Yeah Ill go along with the others and suggest Zeiss Conquest range of scopes, its all I have on my rifles now.
One thing is, I reckon you wont be getting a "point blank" out to 500 yards with a 308Win, I don't know the trajectory off by heart, but reckon point blank would be somewhere between 200 and 300 yds.
Guess this a good opportunity for the AV schemers to jump on and spend a heap of your cash and come up with a heap of ideas for a special custom build for you. If you have a budget of around 5 to 6 grand, Im sure we could come up with something for you.

Big G, hate to see a Sako go to waste. If he is to macho for it you can give it to me and give him a slingshot and I'll shout him the bundy.

I think you already know what good glass is looking at what you use.

Re: 308/Scope combo
I "think" he meant min and max range. Point blank being used in the sense of "at your feet" and 500 as the max range.Camel wrote: One thing is, I reckon you wont be getting a "point blank" out to 500 yards with a 308Win, I don't know the trajectory off by heart, but reckon point blank would be somewhere between 200 and 300 yds.

Do you like wall nut or laminate stocked rifles.Remember it's a 85 model, box mag with top feed, not an L461 or A1?Big GB4408 wrote:Big G, hate to see a Sako go to waste. If he is to macho for it you can give it to me and give him a slingshot and I'll shout him the bundy.

Re: 308/Scope combo
Trevort, tried Nightforce during the day, fantastic, come late in the arvo and night, not so good.Had one of the vx3 on my Tikka 270 (2.5-8 x36),it punched above its weight, not far behind a Kahles 8x56. Now a ziess 3.5 -10 x50 conquest sits on top.Remember that's a according to my eyes..Cheers Big Gtrevort wrote:George, I am the last person to ask for an opinion on glass, I've had nightforce, T36, bushnell 6500, leupold vx 3 elite blah blah blah.
