20 Cal

Post by macca »

As a new comer to the world of owning a 20 cal I am interested on what people are using.
Some are very well documented on here of course.
I would like to know what the strengths of each choice are and any weaknesses you have found.
I acquired a 204 about a month ago and 500 rounds later am pretty happy with it.
Thinking of a new barrel on this action tossing up twist rate etc.
Thinking about a spare action with a 308 face and what to do with it as well.
So this is a bit of a fact finding mission for me.
cheers

20VarTarg is my favourite. 32grainer at 3900fps using 19 grains of powder!! 40 grainer at 3300fps... cant remember the powder charge!

I would like to build another, using the Bell and Carlson stock that the LVSF Remington uses (perfect for single shot because ADL), a custom single shot action, Maddco #5 or #4 which ever fits the barrel channel, and a sightron 6-24. Be a nice lightweight little varminter!

My start in the 20 Cal world was a 204.This calibre impressed me so much that I wanted bigger ,stronger, faster thus the 20 PPC was decided on.Awesome brass eye popping accuracy and it really is a case of pour the powder in seat the projie and go shoot.4100 fps with a 40 grainer is easy 4400 fps with 32`s.
But the last one I built is a 20 Vartarg this one is a sporter weight on a Sako built mainly as a spotlighting dash gun. Then Camel showed me his 20/222

Got a surprise for you blokes, 20/222.
Reasons I like it are pretty numerous
1. My first foray into this 20 wizardry
2. Its mine :D
3. Just like something a little different to the rest of the mob
4. Its mine :D
5. 32 gn Noslers doing 3800 plus fps smash the crap out of cats, foxes, goats, pigs, and will probably head shoot a fallow as soon as the freezer gets down a bit
6. As far as being a wildcat, it would have to be the easiest one to do, just neck em down and load em up.

There isn't any real reason when it all comes down to it, mainly its a bit different, like me.

Yeah mate, sure you did  . If that is so, why did you put 20-250 in twice, sheer bias from you, but that's ok I'm a big boy now and can take the knocks and rejection.

Redding Type "S" Neck bushing die set. They are a Cat 111 but you could use 22 PPC with the a .332 bushing which are a cat11

And you have got it right Two Hump lucky dick is a bit different.

Macca as you know I have a 204. If I had coin then i would turn it into a 20 PPC for the reasons Andrew said already.

BUT

I have a yearn to try the 55 gn bergers but with enough powder to get them to 204 like speeds. 20Br might not have enough powder to get there. 20-250 and 20x47lap seem just too overbore so I reckon a 20 Dasher would be perfect.

Doubts about pill availablity would be a drawback.

If things go like I hope this might be my 50th birthday present from kerriet with a custom single shot action.

If you are wanting to use a 308 bolt face then it has to be a BR doesnt it?

You like Long range shooting, get some of those 55s and build a dasher. Try it at fly or LRBR for a laugh :D

Great, then someone will have a reamer when I'm ready.

I read a lot about those 55s a while ago and thought someone should try them in LRBR. There was an article missed sent me on the 20 titan touting it as the best thing since sliced bread for LR shooting with the 55s. I reckon a dasher would kill a titan and you already have the right bolt face.......

i assume its not an '06 length action, otherwise i'd suggest a 20-06 8)

Not having much experience, In the true aussie way, I am going to have a stab and say

20x57, So grab some 7x57 brass or 5.6x57 brass and neck down to 20 cal
5x50, so again, grab some 5.6x50 rws brass and neck it down to a 20 cal

Just throwing a few oddball ideas out there 8)

I particularly like the 5.6x50 as a case, and RWS brass, is obviously top notch, but exxy if it means anything to you :D

I have a 20 PPC built on a trued Rem 700 it shoots very well, kills like the hand of god, but is a single shot.
The first 20 was a 20 Tac on a 461 Sako shoots like stink feeds like butter, had a fat on building a 20 PPC
repeater but during the week I put them side by side and truthfully the 100fps is not worth worrying about
and the Tac is back in the front row of the safe.
