A mates talking me into a 240Wby .
Okay I was decided on the 270Wby(Deluxe).Or maybe an Ultramark in 270Wby.Waiting on a price/time frame(Up to a 2 year wait?) from the Wby custom shop,as this is classed as an "production up-grade")
Should I go get a 240Wby now in the Ultralight?
And order the 270Wby as well,as it will take at least 1 year("production up-grade") by the looks of things.
This bloody Weatherbyitis is costing me plenty .

The .240 Weatherby is a very good cartridge if you want 6 mm bullets to go very fast with a minium of work. You can get great dies (Forester) and high quality brass-it's very easy to make accurate ammunition. I would spend my money on a custom reamer with a tight neck .269 (use factory .272) and match specs on the body. Chamber this in a medium 26 "+ barrel with a twist to match the bullet desired .Use a action such as the older Tikka and spend the rest of the money on optics and mounts.
The factory 26" gave 70-3850 ,87 @3520 ,100 gr.@3365 with older factory loads just to tease you a bit. The factory throat will fit up to 105 Lapua - otherwise 70 gr Nosler and less can seat a bit shallow and a slighter shorter throat to match lighter bullets will be better. One barrel in 1-14 and one in 1-9 would be interesting. Have fun!!

Try a 70 gr Speer TNT on an orange at 100 yds.

Sorry Tez,
I'd just build a 6mm/06 and save my money. I think Weatherby's are an affliction whose bubble bursts the moment you hammer something with it and realise it does nothing very much different to what your mates' much cheaper rifles do. All the Wbys bar the 257 and 378 are now closely matched by a factory cartridge or a semi-popular wildcat. The only Wby that offers something significantly different to me is the 257Wby ... and I'd be making brass from 7mmRemMag rather than pay the extortion being charged for Norma brass.
If your interested ... there was a 300Wby in a MarkV action, blackened stainless Kreiger barrel, greenish (quite nice!) factory laminated stock for sale locally. I dont think its a custom shop but rather a special order model or a limited production model (??) Dealer was asking mid $2000 for the package but then stupidly split the high class German optics ontop of it and now can't sell the rifle ... which comes with dies and cases. He thought he'd get a quick turnaround on this "quality rifle" but I think its now been sitting for almost 18-24 months ... whilst an $800 Win M70 in 300Weatherby literally walked out the door
Cheers...

Just looking at the velocities you posted and realised that my handloads out of my 6mmrem VLS are only about 100fps behind for those bullet weights. So if you got a 6mmrem AI built you should be right up there with the 240 weatherby . I dare say brass wouild be easier to get or make than the weatherby stuff too.
Cheers Jethro

I prefer the older std Mk V in .240 Weatherby 26" barrel style wood stock version to shoot at the range and a few coyotes .I replaced the stock with a kevlar Brown Precision blank that I bedded and finished-really wish I'd not sold the original stock-long story.
Now if you can find an older .240 action with the later trigger ( re-pin and tune ),have it barreled in #2 contour and find a stock you can have your wish at a reasonable price. Does Weatherby make all the .240 caliber even in the custom shop on the small action now?
I believe in loading to a level that you can fire the brass 8-10 times before the primer pockets open up. The Norma brass is bench rest quality and stands up well in loading . Other 6mm cartridges are fast and accurate -I believe the .240 Wby. is one of the better designs in 6mm HV cartridges . Of course if you compare it to 6PPC or 6Br it is not quite as efficent and as big capacity as you want to go for 6mm bullets.
And it's fun to shoot!

you have obviously not seen the difference in power even on pig sized game with a 378wby compared to a 375h&h or ask lowndsie what difference there is between the 338-378 and a 338win. even 500lbs of energy is noticeable on game with the size of exit wounds but considering many wby calibres are near 1000lbs of energy more per given projectile weight in a calibre you sure as hell notice the difference.
if you were to fire 3 bullets of the same weight at 1000, 2000 and 3000fps the second hits 4 times as hard as the first and the third nine times as hard. velocity is a huge part of killing. for example the 30-378 with 180gr pill hids harder at 400yards than what the .308 does at the muzzle.
