Anyone heard of or had any experience with the new Remington SPS varmints? Are there better rifles for the same price $1000 new

This has a bit of info on the varmints.

I cant talk specifically about the varmint model but i am happy with my basic model sps in 223. Possibly if i was to do it all again i would look at the varmint or tactical, but i would also have a better look at Tikka's or consider saving for the Rem 700 VSSF II.

As for a basic knock about rifle i am very happy with the Rem SPS

Tikka T3 varmint would be worth closer inspection, guarranteed to shoot 1moa out of the box. You may, or may not, like the ejection port setup as It makes single round loading very difficult. The Stock is adjustable on the varmint model T3 too I think.
The Howa Varmint stainless with Hogue stock would be another that will be well within your budget.
Nothing wrong with the remington. But they dont make any accuaracy guarrantees were as the other 2 do.

If I were spending ~$1000 on a varminting rifle it would be a Ruger M77mkII VT!

I have ruger 77/17 at the moment (sporter barrel). It took me a while to get it to shoot well. Not really keen on te Rugers at the moment

I understand the SPS-V has a bit of fore end flex, save your $$$s and get either a VSF or VSSF II.

The VT is a different breed mate!

There sems to be alot of the VTs on the secondhand market at the moment. I might go have a look at a couple.

Where are all those VT's up for sale? I too am looking at possibly getting one of them.

Mick smiths have at least 2. One in 243 and 1 in 220 Swift.
Usedgins.com have one in 22-250.

Just a quick note.

If buying one second hand pick one in very good condition and on it's original barrel, this obviously will go for any second hand rifle but especially the stainless rugers.

The reason being that the stainless in these actions is very soft and will wear excessively if not looked after. The main area of this wear is the locking lugs. They need to be kept very clean and well lubed to reduce wear and gaulling. As they wear the headspace opens up.

I have seen many with headspace that is well out of spec. On an action that has had little use or is well looked after the back of the lugs on the bolt will look fairly clean and neat but on a bolt that has been worn you will be able to feel a burr on the rear outside edge of the lug and gaulling will also be apparent on the lug seating area.

A well rebarreled rifle will have this corrected and the headspace will be set to suit.

I am not trying to turn people off these rifles but just letting them know what to look for.

A 20" barrel is just simply no good for a specialty Varmint rifle IMO, even a loss of a conservative 30fps per inch over a normal length (26") varmint barrel is going to be down 180fps and most of the high intensity cartridges will lose a lot more than 30fps per inch. Those 'Tactical' rifles with the short barrel are a waste of money for hunting - unless you are hunting humans at less than a couple of hundred yards.

How do you think the SPS tactical in 223 be would be for a, dare I say "do it all rifle". I only have room for 2 rifles and 1 is a 17HMR the other is a BSA superstar air rifle which I am looking at replacing with a centrefire. I prefer varminiting but would also like to be able to do a bit of walkin around. I know I'm asking alot but I don't mind lugging heavy things around as it just improves my fitness.
