Can someone recommend a gunsmith that could flute my custom 204 barrel. Its a heavy varmint Profile Lilja and would like to take some weight out of it. Cheers

apart from weight, why would you flute a barrel as aposed to getting a thinner barrel ?

G'day All,
fluting is basically to have a stiffer barrel for a given weight when compared to an unfluted barrel of THE SAME WEIGHT.

Balance of the rifle also comes into it, if you can have a stiffer profiled barrel for a given length & weight why wouldn't you?

As for improved cooling, dont get me started, if you wanted to cool your rifle you either add more mass to adsorb it or add cooling fins like a motorcycle engine, not long flutes! They hardly allow good airflow especially in a barrel channel, and fluting reduces the mass that can adsorb the heat, plus the added cost and possible stresses induced into the barrel.

It may be better to lop a couple of inches of the muzzle to get the balance right at the expense of a 100-200fps of MV, guess what the varmints wont notice the MV drop, a bit like comparing a 222rem to a 223 really.

FWIW of course

Cheerio Ned

I got mine fluted because I like the way it looks, pure and simple.

Pete at procal could do it I would think.

Just had one done by Total Solutions Engineering in Qld . Cost about $135 . Workmanship was excellent.
