Rem 700 SUPER HORNET

Post by Ron Goulding »

I thought id share some photos of my Project that i have finally been working on for the last year. It still hasnt been completed but its very close, still has to be restocked in a laminated stock just have to open up the barrell channel. But here it is in its current stock , built by Mr Shane Clancy ! I know most will say im Crazy and i think Shane did when i asked him to chamber it in 22 Hornet too ? But i had a Ruger and liked the way it looked but after doing research about head space probelms with bolt design i gave it back. The next Hornet was a Brno with set triggers but felt all wrong to me, skinny to light and i had trouble fitting the scope. So after some thought i thought id ask the guru if he would take on this project for me , he couldnt get it to feed as a repeater , but to be Honest i really dont mind. If i cant hit it with the 1st shot it deserves to get away, so i can pop it off ten minutes later whilst i try to reload haha ! Cheers Ron

If i cant hit it with the 1st shot it deserves to get away,
that's a great philosophy there . but i'm sure it seldom happens . as for the rifle , i to am a fan of the hornet BUT headspace & top accuracy is always a problem , & most 22 hornet factory rifles don't seem to shoot as good as the rimless ones . that's why i'm going for a 204 & reduce loading using blue dot or trail boss @ hornet velocities . i did way up doing a custom build & prices would blow out a bit over a std 204 howa . also magazine length comes into with me  . i am a big fan of the hornet & had one for years & found it very hard to give up but the old savage 340c just isn't worth the hastle . i toyed with idear of a k hornet or 17 hornet on a m85 action up untill i found the reduced loads for the 204 . btw this isn't ment to negitive at all , just what i came up with cash wise . all the best with this build , i'm sure it will be great as i hear time & time again about great builds done by shane  . enjoy .

How did Shane modify the bolt to accept the smaller rim size? How accurate is it?

Hi M , you will have to ask him how he modifyed the bolt, but here is a photo if it helps ? So far ive only run in the barrell as per instructions, 1shot clean x 10 then two 5 shot groups and all were touching at 50mtrs with factory loads. Im sure with handloads this will only get better, I love it ! Ive done some case prep and just need to get some powder AR2207. Cheers Ron :D

I found 2207 a bit slow Ron, 2205 was the go before and after K'ing it.

Hi Sam , the reason i was going for AR2207 is i found i can reload for my 223 as well. I dont like having to buy powder for just one caliber if i can help it. Can you use the 2205 for the 223 I couldnt find it in NH reloading manual ? Cheers Ron

The ADI site shows 18-20gn of 2205 with 40gn bullet but no 2205 loads for heavier bullets

Ron that is one cool hornet 8) 8) my experiance with the hornet 4227 is the powder 12gn with 40 v max will be a good start I have tried lots of loads. My cooper likes 4227 my K zkw likes 680 win 17 AH likes 4227 have tried 296 don't like it, it is a bit volitile, lil gun is a bit fussy but I will definatly do some more testing. If you are ever up Cessnock way let me know and I will give you a pound of 4227. Having said all that I have never tried 2205 but I think it pretty close to 4227.

Have had the 4227 for a long time when I shot IHMSA I used 20 gns in my 357Max with 200gn cast bullets {BOOM} got the Lil gun from local gun shop AAA Cessnock but can tell you they have none left but pretty sure it is imported by Winchester. I also think Horsley Park has had some in the past.
