Stolle Atlas 6PPC

Post by Steve 2141 »

I finally built one, for a few years now I’ve been on the lookout for a Remington 40X to do up as a varmint rifle, couldn’t find a good one at the right price so I built this on a tight budget. It’s my 1st attempt at stock work and pillar bedding.

Cheers

Fit and finish look great - but I reckon the grip cap is way too big - I'd reshape it to about 3mm thick (personal taste though) Is it walnut or something else ?

Very nice Steve, mate how would you rate the action...............................I imagine that it would be the typical fit and finish that we come to expect from Kelblys, also what sort of budget was the action purchased on and from where?

Regards Chris.

Hi

It’s a single shot Stolle Atlas with pin recoil lug, .068” firing pin, Jewell trigger with top safety set at about 5 ounce, the barrel is a Lilja heavy varmint contour with a 14” twist chambered in 6PPC .264”nk with .060”fb, will suit 67g flat base pills

The stock is from a Remington 40X range Master it’s most likely about 30yrs old, I reasonably sure that they were made for prone shooting so I shaped a palm swell into the pistol grip as well as extending it with a piece of acetal to fit my hand and make it more comfortable for shooting off a window rest. Finished it off with boiled linseed oil and pure gum turpentine then bees wax.

I also bought a 2nd bolt in 222 and Mistit gave me an old thumbhole stock, but that’s for another day.

I imported the action and trigger directly from Kelbly’s, both bolts have an identical feel, just as smooth as my GII and not loose. Mistit was here today and liked it. Between the two bolts there is only .005” difference in the firing pin fall

I think that a bare action without recoil lug is now US$850, comes with trigger guard, trigger hanger and 3 action screws, chris.tyne if you want more info pm me your landline number and I’ll give you a call

Cheers

Copperheads?
I use 67gr projectiles in my 6x47L with devastating results!

Steve do you know what sort of speed you are getting?

Hi Glenn

I’ve never really used a chrony much when doing load development for the PPC as I’m only shooting 100 & 200yds, although once you go over 3300ft/sec it starts to knock the brass around, but 3400ft/sec plus is attainable with a good action. Realistically 90% of my spotlighting is sub 220yds and I selected the 6PPC so I could recycle my old competition brass, I’ll most likely work up a load using 2206H with Kuehn or Copperhead pills up to 3200ft/sec, so for a zero at 200yds it will 1” high at 100yds. I've found that with this load great case life is attainable and you can get away with just neck sizing the brass.

If you lived in Canada I would send you some brass and bullets for that gun.
Try H-4198 @ 24.8 gr with Rem 7 1/2 primers using 65 -68 Bergers .006 into the lands .

Impressive !
After the long wait for this project -enjoy.

Well after many a year I finally had the opportunity to shoot again, so the 1st rifle I wanted to try out was the Stolle Atlas in 6PPC, I fitted it with a Lynx 6x24 scope. I scrounge up 50 pieces of old comp brass, from different batches, I wouldn’t have a clue how many cycles they have been through, by the time I had trimmed and cleaned them up so to have the same neck and case length the were .040” short of the chamber length and .005” neck clearance. I ended up having to dump 10 cases at the range as the bases were so work harden that even though I was using a Redding SB die I couldn’t FLS them enough to chamber.

Being a truck gun I thought I’ll look at what I had plenty of in the shed and decided that I’ll try Sierra #1500 60gr HP Varminters. I started off with AR2206H it only took 2 groups to realise that I had to go for a hotter powder and settled on BM1, 3 shot group 0.140” and 5 shot group 0.270”

Cheers

I thought being such a long stick that it would prefer the slower stuff, in the 1st photo it shows the results from 2206H and BM2, going to the hotter stuff closed up the group straight away and adjusting the seating depth took out the vertical
