Does anyone have any experience with the Savage model 25 Lightweight Varmiter?

A bloke at work is getting back into shooting, after a diverse session at the range on Sunday morning, I've convinced him that a 223 would make a good starter rifle. The Savage 25 is the right price and from what I can see, it offers many of the things you could want.

But I havn't handled one, let alone used one for a while.

held one in a shop a few years ago. I wasnt impressed bolt felt like a rimfire (and looked it) I wouldnt own one

Send him down the tikka path mate, getting back into it he will no doubt appreciate an accurate gun. CZ and rugers get a decent rep on here too.

I would never recommend a Tikka T3 in 223 to anyone. Too much action, too little cartridge.

CZ 527 rifles are handicapped from the factory and need surgery to remove an unsightly cosmetic blemish at the root of the bolt handle that prevents scopes being mounted properly.

Rugers, Howas are OK for the money, even Remo700 rifles are becoming OK for the cash at the moment.

I personally like the little Zastava m85 actions in 223, but they do need to smooth out work to make them more useable.

It doesn't look like many have actually used the Savage 25. Online journal reports indicate a rifle capable of good accuracy out of the box, and the 1:9 twist is handy to have. I'll have to see if I can hold him off long enough to check one out in person.

I see you point, but the bick action it is slick as snot and will be bloody accurate straight from the box.

I have 2 one needed surgery for the low scope and one didnt as the scope had a 50mm obj and needed medium rings anyway

Adam I know where there is a Tikka T3 with low round count for very reasonable dollars.

Might have a long bolt throw but it is also the slickest action out there. Bet i can cylce mine quicker than a CZ527.
