Long Range Hunting Equipment, now Videos.

Post by Ackley Improved »

Thought I would share what equipment I take along shooting these days. I am not really content with shooting less than 300m now as I find it a little boring. All my gear has turned into long range hunting, which I am enjoying.

What I have been taking along has evolved.. I have tried chest rigs, and you just take more shit than you need.

Also the rifles tend to be a little on the heavy side too, mine in the range of 15-17lbs.

Now I am using a Biathlon sling to carry the rifle, and it has been one of the best investments yet. Makes carrying the big heavy rifle no problem.

Everything else goes in the belt/pocket system, and there is just enough room.

In there is

Swaro Laser Guide
Kestrel 4500NV
PDA with Exbal
Small UHF
Ammo holder
Water bottle.
I can also put another 500ml of water into the big pouch when the going hot.

Around my neck the binos, whicha re the Bushnell's. I have the harness for these but will go without it for starters. These will be used more than anything else so they shouldnt be a problem where they are.

The rifles both have ACI units and bubble level to stop the canting.

All packed its a lot of gear that can be easily carried.

Here is a couple of videos, taken with phone so quality a bit poor. You should get the drift though. This is the 300WSM shooting 200 grain Sierra Matchkings, range 780m to the tree shown on the edge of the paddock at the end of the videos. You can also see how efficient the muzzle brake is, very little recoil which allows easy spotting of shots. I was shooting at a small section of branch, and 4 shots were hits. Others only very near misses.

I will have to invest in a half decent video camera now I think. It looks like a whole lot of fun using one!!! Dont pick on the shooting mat either!!!!!! :D

AI,
That's a great set up. Do you run an angle cosine indicator or degree indicator on your rifle?
I stuff all my things in an Eberlestock Gunslinger pack.
Is the sling an Outlaw sling? I have a few on order.
Do you carry a back up drop chart? I find it a useful quick referance to check the PDA.
The mat is a good idea if you can get close, keeps the dust down too. Here is a photo of me taking a shot from a high rocky ridge. Those rocks are not comfortable to lay on.
You can see my laminated backup drop chart tied to the scope mounts. The shot was 920 yards with a 16 degree down angle. You can see the rear beanie bag that I got off you is still getting plenty of use...........thanks.

Mate

Sling is a TAB. It is awesome!!

My ACI is cosine... really the only one to choose. The cosine version also gives the angle... if you can count by 5's!!

Have never seen a pic of anything you have killed, at any distance. Money may buy you speed or accuracy but it can't buy you hunting skill

Interesting post....... your off the Xmas card list

Define hunting skill??? Spotlighting and shooting shit point blank.. fuck loads of skill needed for that..... sitting over a warren and shooting rabbits at 200m, fuckloads of skill needed too???

Whistling foxes, yep skill there, but shit all when it comes to shooting them within 50m with shotgun......

Show me pictures of your hunting skill please :D

Cheers

Thats one hell of a call the AI, have a talk to any of the Bowmen, deer hunters etc on the Border and see if they know Cliff and tell them he has no hunting skill. Butr im with him on this, you have never posted a Hunt report etc on here that i can remember?

As for the Kestral, well you know your self they are only good for where they are and wont tell you whats happening down range, no wind flags in the feild either.

Im not pissing in his pocket as i dont need freinds that bad, but i have seen this guy find and track wounded deer that a GWp couldn't, maybe next time your in at Elks ask Trouty to tell you Cliff's bow shot goat story it will kill ya :D

As for hunting skill remember last year an old fella rolled a Fallow stag in the rut, then said now i want one with the Muzzle loader? Two days later it was on here dead with the Muzzle loader, if you think shooting deer etc at 50 mtrs is easier than plugging them from 500-600+ then you are showing how narrow minded you are.

The man writes a thread about the equipment that he uses and some dickhead jumps in and attacks him about his lack of hunting skill.

AI states..."All my gear has turned into long range hunting, which I am enjoying" The man never claims to be the best hunter on Earth. He just states that he enjoys long range hunting.

If you have some thing to say about long range shooting equipment then please let us know, but if you are just trying to stir up trouble then what's your motive?

I am a little confused as to the motive behind such a statement!
I get the impression you are having a dig cause AI can afford good gear

We all like something different, some hunt, some target shoot, some spotlight and some are into long-range shooting!
That's their decision!

After reading your post it seem you have another skill as well as hunting!

Nice setup AI, similar to what I'm running except I'm using data cards & iPhone as backup.

As for the idiots poking their heads into this thread to beat their chests and bleat about hunting skills, fashion a spear from some wood and rundown your game and kill it, that would be impressive, failing that let's not pretend modern hunting is some sort of gruelling endeavour, enough 12 year old girls have proven that killing animals is hardly demanding :D Hunting is a hobby, enjoy it and leave be those who choose to do it different than you (as long as it's ethical)

Are you serious?

As for chest beating, not from me. I don'g know what CB motives were behind posting what he did? But i will stand by what i said and say that saying he is no hunter would be like me tell JR that he cant shoot for shit and is just a novice.
Nopw wouldn't that post cause a stir

AI never said CB has no hunting skill, He said define hunting skill! and gave a few examples!!!!

As for tracking a deer better than a GSP well thats amazing should be on Customs Boader security sniffing suitcases.
Long range shooting really has nothing to do with "Hunting Skill" I don't know anyone who stalks game with a 17lb to 22lb rifle.
The post is about equipment needed to help enable a hit 1st shot @ range. Where every little variable that affects the bullets path must be accounted for. The equipment listed helps take the guess work out of it for us mere mortals, and its a bit of fun.
